Family

Father
James Reed c. 1766–bef. 1845

A Morgan County land transfer names him "son of James and Susannah" (per JoEllen Reed's notes; the deed has not been seen). That James is Mary Reed's father only under the Morgan reading, which the Reed addendum leans to.

Notes

His birth in Clay County in May 1813 is the record that places James Reed’s family in Kentucky by then, if he is James’s son. His obituary, as quoted in a 2014 online query, has the family moving from Clay County to Morgan County, Indiana, in 1831.

As “Naman Reed” he received a federal patent on 10 September 1838 for a forty in Section 17, T11N R1E (the SW quarter of the NE quarter), adjoining John Reed’s land in the Reed block. In 1840 (“Nawarn” in the index) he heads a free colored household in Morgan County: a boy under 10, a man 24-36, a man 55-100, a young woman 10-24 and a woman 55-100. In 1860, in Washington Township, Morgan County, Namon Reed, 47, mulatto, born Kentucky, has Delila, 50, mulatto, born North Carolina, and children Norman 23, Diana 21, Noah 17, Drucilla 15, Dalena 12 and Sarah A. 9, all born Indiana. He is in the Morgan County censuses to 1880.

James Reed gave 29 acres to “Norman” in 1836. JoEllen Reed’s notes list Norman and Naaman separately and she is unsure whether they are one man; Naaman’s son Norman was born about 1837.

  • His 1840 row has no girl under 10, though Diana was born about 1839; re-read at full zoom.
