Notes
The family’s earliest scout west. His son Harman was born in Iowa about 1836 (about 20 in the 1856 Appanoose County census), so Tilford was there by then, whatever the fourteen years’ residence he gave in 1856. “Tifford” Reed is under “Van Buren, Iowa Territory,” in the 1840 census, with Benjamin Reed two pages away. By 1850 he was in Wells Township, Appanoose County, from Kentucky, counted white, with a large family: Jane, Harmon, Emily, Alexander, Martha, Elizabeth and Rachel. Mary (Reed) Collins settled near him and Benjamin after Jesse’s death.
He is not among the children in JoEllen Reed’s notes on the Morgan County James.
