Notes
The younger Stephen. He attested James Read’s note of 25 November 1827 asking the clerk to license Jesse Collins to marry Mary, eighteen days before he and Mary were married on the same day. Another Powell, Sytha, married William Collins in Clay County in 1832.
He is probably the younger of the two 1830 Clay County Stephen Reids, a free colored man with a white woman aged 15-20 [?], and possibly the free colored Reed whose first name may read “Stevin” at the foot of the 1840 Morgan County image 32: a man 36-55, a woman 24-36, four boys and one or more girls under 10 [?]. Some online trees give Stephen Reed Jr a second wife named Nancy Powell; the two separate Stephens of 1830 argue against that.
Open questions
- The loose file for his 1827 marriage: shared witnesses, hand or adjacent file numbers with Mary’s would close the double wedding.
