Notes
Son of Meredith Collins by his first wife, whose name no record gives, and half-brother of Jesse. Older notes and some online trees made him Jesse’s father; the dates rule that out. The DAR’s Bradley-line papers name Polly Holloway as his mother, which is wrong.
In 1820 his Floyd County, Kentucky, household was entered first as white and then moved, entry by entry, into the free colored and slave columns. In Clay County in 1830 his household of eleven was counted white, with no adult woman in it. He had 50 acres on Shelby Creek, Pike County, in 1829. He sold his Clay County land in 1839 and went west, by flatboat per Eula Conley, to Chariton County, Missouri (1840 census), and on to Appanoose County, Iowa, in 1844 with his son Andrew’s family. A judge of the August 1849 election there. In 1850 he was in Andrew’s household in Center Township, counted white, unable to read or write.
Children named in the research: Andrew (b. c. 1811, Kentucky; m. Betsy Ann Sizemore 31 Mar 1838, Clay County; d. c. 1875, Scott County, Missouri), whose mother is unknown; and Nancy (b. c. 1822; m. Williams; d. 1909, Appanoose County), by Sarah Reid. John Collins (b. c. 1821), of Independence Township in 1850, who named a son Bradley, may be another.
