Notes
Probably Jesse’s full brother. He witnessed James Read’s note of 25 November 1827 asking the Clay County clerk to license Jesse to marry Mary Reed, the first record that places the two together. In 1830, on the Clay County page with James Reid, Bradley and Abraham Collins, Hiram and his wife were entered in the slave columns and their small son in the white column. In 1840 he headed a free colored household of seven in Morgan County, Indiana, on the page after James Reed’s; older notes put this entry in Montgomery County, very likely a misreading.
Not the Hiram Collins, 25, of Independence Township, Appanoose County, in 1850, nor (probably) the Hiram of Knox County, Indiana, in 1850; at least two or three Hirams are in the records.
Open questions
- Where was he after 1840? The earlier work on the several Hirams is not in the research files.
