The immigrant. Ralph Ellwood, 28, sailed from London on the Truelove in September 1635
(record); a planter of Salem from the first winter, then on the Bass River
side that became Beverly, where his farm on the point is still Ellingwood Point. One of the
founders of the Beverly church in 1667. Eight children by Eleanor, seven of them living when he
died in January 1673/4. His life is the Prologue and Chapter One of the Ellingwood book
(books/ellingwood/).
Open questions
- His English origins. Nothing connects him to any English family (Banks; Ellinwood 1963, p. 9 (record); the College of Arms search of 1953, record). Online trees, the Ancestry tree among them, give him a father Timothy Ellwood of Great Gransden, Huntingdonshire, and a line behind that; nothing supports it, and it is not used here.
