- note
- The family Bible, per Gray. The trees give 18 Aug or Sept 1809 at Pownal; no record has been found. The Hampden intention of 10 Sept 1809 is his sister Sally's.
Finley Ellingwood's grandfather, the "great grandfather Richard Ellingwood" for whom Cudge was named. Twelve when his father died at Frankfort, he was named first in his father's will (record). Ruth Gray says he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Hampden, 3 September 1814, when the British came up the Penobscot (source).
He married Hannah Brown in 1809. Their children were born in Maine to 1815 and in New York in 1817; the family went west about 1816-18, perhaps by way of Cincinnati (a Richard Ellinwood there in 1817, and "Eilingwood Richard, shipcarpenter" in the 1819 directory, possibly he), to Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana, settled from 1817 by families from Cumberland County, Maine (source). He is at Manchester in the 1840 census (record); in 1850 at Clay Township, 60, born Maine, with Hannah and two grandchildren, Elizabeth A. and John B. Kennedy, the children of his daughter Harriet (record); in 1860 at Manchester again, a carpenter (record).
Open questions
- An Indiana record naming his father or his Maine birthplace, which would prove the link to Frankfort; and the family Bible itself (Elliott Lee Ellingwood of Pasadena, 1929).
- The 1809 marriage record; Dearborn County deeds, probate and graves.
- The tree also attaches a 20th-century public-records entry at Topsham, Maine, which belongs to someone else.
