What it says

Two compiled genealogies by Jean Fairchild Gilmore: Early Fairchilds in America and Their Descendants (1991) and its sequel of additions and corrections, More Fairchilds in America (2001), https://archive.org/details/more-fairchilds-in-america. Both are in copyright and quoted briefly here. First used from the research file research/mcmillan/McMillan_Frost_Master_Research.md; read in the archive.org full text for research/mcmillan/Fairchild_Raymond_Woodworth.md (October 2026).

Gilmore cites numbered sources: (1A) the Connecticut vital records; (235) W. B. Plume’s manuscript “Genealogy of the Fairchild Family,” which she says gave no sources; (6) private correspondence; (26) the censuses; (41A, 41B) deeds. Much of the Greene County generation rests on Plume and correspondence.

Thomas Fairchild of Stratford (1991, pp. 1-3, from Wilcoxson’s History of Stratford): “d. 14 Dec 1670 Stratford, CT., age 60 (1A). m. (1) (prob. Emma) Seabrook … m. (2) Katherine Craig Dec 1662 London, England. (Pre-nuptial agreement 22 Dec 1662).” “He was a Deputy from Stratford to the General Court and served eleven sessions from Apr 1646 to Oct 1665.” The bond gave the bride “a life estate in his lands and a sum of 200 pounds to be paid to her if he died before arrival in New England.” “Thomas’ will, written a week before he died, named the children of his first wife and wife Katherine, but did not include her children.” His English origin (High Laver, per Banks) she could not verify. Of his first wife (p. xv and the Seabrook note): “Various researchers offer the names of Emma or Faith as the wife of Thomas. Neither of these two names appear on the Tring parish records”; she quotes Jacobus, Families of Old Fairfield: “Emma born by 1620, married by 1639 and died after 23 Oct 1653, her husband probably being Thomas Fairchild.”

Samuel Fairchild (1991, p. 3): b. 31 Aug 1640, Stratford; d. Jan 1704/5; m. Mary Wheeler, b. 13 Sep 1655, who m. (2) Benjamin Beach 5 Dec 1705 and (3) Thomas Yale 31 Jul 1716 at Wallingford, and d. 17 Aug 1747 at Wallingford. “On 10 Dec 1674 Samuel’s lands were recorded. He had 12A received from his father 30 Dec 1668, land received by gift from his grandfather Seabrook and land he had received in exchange with brother Thomas. … Samuel was a ship’s carpenter and a member of the Congregational Church in Stratford.” Children: Robert 1681, Samuel c. 1682, Anna, Edward 1685/6, Jonathan 10 Oct 1692.

Jonathan Fairchild of Norwalk (1991, pp. 8-9): “Jonathan sold his Stratford land from Feb 1714 to 1715. He first bought land in Norwalk in 1717. His will … names his widow and six children.”

Thomas Fairchild of Norwalk and Bedford (1991, p. 27): “Ann Raymond must be his wife, as Ephraim Raymond’s will … names a daughter Ann Fairchild and ‘my grand-daughter Sarah that I brought up’. Sarah probably refers to Thomas’ first-born child.” Children at Norwalk: Sarah 14 Nov 1742, Jonathan 29 Aug 1744, John 15 Apr 1747, Mary 31 Jan 1749.

Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett (1991, pp. 79-81): “Jonathan built the first tannery in Greene county, NY. (6).” “Henry was administrator of Jonathan’s estate, the date of the bond being 28 Feb 1815. The inventory was done by Henry on 20 Apr 1815.” His wife: “Through correspondence and from Mr. Plume’s Fairchild genealogy (235) it was learned that the wife of Jonathan was Elizabeth Cooper … yet ‘Elizabeth’ is head of family on the 1820 NY. census. Were both wives named Elizabeth?” At Fairview Cemetery, Bridgewater, Oneida County, where his daughter Anne (Fairchild) Page is buried: “Also buried in that cemetery is a Jonathan Fairchild who died 1815 in Livingston, Herkimer county, age 66, along with his wife Sarah Rich, who died 1787, age 36. … There is a difference of five years in the births of these two according to Norwalk, CT. vital records for one and the Oneida county cemetery records for the other.” The 1810 census, Windham, Greene County: Jonathan, “2 males under 10; 1 male 10-16; 1 male 16-26; 1 male over 45; 2 females 10-16; 1 female 26-45.”

His sons (1991, pp. 180-183): Henry, administrator in 1815, “called Harry” in the 1820 census, “sold land to brother Edward on 7 Feb 1826”; Edward “sold his Greene county land to brother Richard on 21 Sep 1840.” John: “b. 1802 (235) or 16 Jan 1807”; “d. 3 Feb 1867 Heart Prairie, WI.”; m. (1) Catherine Clawson/Classon “in 1825,” d/o Isiah, “d. 28 Jul 1834 (235)”; m. (2) Sally Clawson/Classon, d/o Isiah, d. 21 Jun 1843; m. (3) Tryphena Pomeroy 1845. “A deed dated 29 Oct 1827 in Greene county, NY. in which John and Catherine Fairchild and others are named as ‘heirs at law’ of Isiah Classon, deceased, proves that Catherine Classon is John’s wife. A deed in Cattaraugus county, NY. dated 14 Jan 1839 names John and wife Sally as selling land to Edward Fairchild.” Children of John and Catherine include “Adeline Asenath b. 27 Mar 1829; m. William H. Bell 8 Sep 1849; d. 17 Mar 1891 St. Cloud, MN.” (the research file’s reading; the archive.org text has “1828,” perhaps an OCR slip). Under Edward’s children (p. 181) is “Adeline b. ca 1829 (26),” from the 1850 census, where she was in Edward’s household. Richard C.: b. 27 Apr 1808, East Jewett; d. 1 Jun 1882, Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, Iowa; “m. Nancy Woodworth 3 Jul 1829 East Jewett, NY. (235)”; their daughter Elizabeth “b. 1 Apr 1830 E. Jewett,” d. “8 May 1889 Cloverdale, CA.” Richard and Nancy “are of town of Windham when they are named with other heirs of Lemuel Woodworth, including Julius and Jonathan Fairchild, on an indenture of 1 Apr 1846, selling land in town of Hunter, which was real estate of Lemuel Woodworth, deceased (41B).” Julius and Jonathan were sons of Henry Fairchild and Hannah Woodworth, “d/o Lemuel Woodworth (41B).”

More Fairchilds in America (2001), pp. 57-59: “IA3-1-1 JONATHAN FAIRCHILD: b. 29 Aug 1744 Norwalk, CT. d. bef. 28 Feb 1815 Lexington, Greene Co., NY.; bur. Fairview Cem., Bridgewater, Oneida Co., NY. m. (1) Sarah Rich of Yonkers, NY. ca 1769 CT./NY.; b. 1751; d. 1787 perhaps Columbia Co., NY. … m. (2) Elizabeth Cooper ca 1787 prob. Dutchess or Columbia Co., NY.” “An Elizabeth Cooper was bpt. 3 Apr 1771 in Christ Church in Rye, Westchester Co., NY. d/o Ebenezer & Priscilla (Smith) Cooper. It is not known if this is the wife of Jonathan Fairchild.” Seven children by Sarah (among them Ann, b. 26 Mar 1782, who m. Theodore Page and d. 1872 at Bridgewater) and nine by Elizabeth: “Benjamin b. 1788 Chatham, Columbia Co., NY.; Henry b. 20 Feb 1791 Scot Spatten, NY.; Catherine b. 1792 …; Caroline b. ca 1794 …; Jonathan b. ca 1795 …; Edward b. 19 Apr 1797 Cairo, Greene Co., NY.; Son b. ca 1799 …; John b. 16 Jan 1802 Greene Co., NY.; Richard C. b. 27 Apr 1808 East Jewett.” “In 1993 the family of Jonathan Fairchild was researched in depth by Mrs. Delite Gaddie, A.G. of Mesa, AZ.” And: “The ‘Hartford Times’ (CT.) query of 31 May 1944 gives Jonathan born 29 Aug 1744 Norwalk, CT. and says he had a brother Ezekial. Jonathan, according to Norwalk church records, was son of Thomas and Ann (Raymond) Fairchild.” Pp. 140 and 142 are additions on the Bell and Frost families.
