Lemuel Woodworth

Probably the father of Nancy (Woodworth) Fairchild of East Jewett, Greene County, New York. Born at Lebanon, Connecticut, in 1772 (1778 on his stone), probably a son of Lemuel Woodworth there, he married Lydia Winter and in 1806 came with her brother Matthew's family from Scott's Patent to East Jewett. Two of his daughters married sons of Jonathan Fairchild; he and Lydia died in 1845.

Notes

Father of Nancy (Woodworth) Fairchild, of East Jewett, Greene County, New York. Born at Lebanon, Connecticut, he came to the Catskills by way of Scott’s Patent: “In 1806 Lemuel and Lydia, with her bro. and his sister, Matthew and Anna (Woodworth) Winter (O. C. 1, 2) and their families, came from Scott’s Patent, in Schoharie Co. or nearby in Albany Co. and settled in East Jewett” (source). The two families were bound twice over, a brother and sister of each marrying a sister and brother of the other. Jonathan Fairchild’s son Henry had been born at “Scot Spatten” in 1791, so the Fairchilds were probably their neighbours before East Jewett as well as after. An early list printed by Beers has “Lemuel Woodworth 9” near “Jonathan Fairchild 8” and “Matthew Winter 11” (source).

Two of his daughters married sons of Jonathan Fairchild: Nancy married Richard C. Fairchild in 1829, and Hannah, whom Gilmore also makes his daughter from the deeds, married Henry Fairchild about 1812. On 1 April 1846 “other heirs of Lemuel Woodworth, including Julius and Jonathan Fairchild” (Hannah’s sons) joined Richard and Nancy in selling land in the town of Hunter that had been his (source). The Woodworth Records knew little of him: “his sons are said to have gone to New York City. The only son whose name is known is— 1 Lemuel” (source).

He and Lydia died in the same year and share a stone: “They were lovely and pleasant in this life and in their death [they were not divided]” (2 Samuel 1:23).

The Ancestry tree’s middle initial “G.” has no source and is not used.

Open questions

  • His birth year: 1772 (the Woodworth Records) or 1778 (the gravestone as printed). The Lebanon vital records (Barbour) should settle it.
  • When and where he married Lydia Winter, and the rest of their children.
  • Where he is buried: the East Kill Valley Genealogy’s plot “IV 1” was not identified.
