Catherine Clawson

Also Catherine Classon · Catherine Closson · Catherine Fairchild

First wife of John Fairchild, whom she married by 1827, and probably the mother of Adeline (Fairchild) Bell. Probably a daughter of Josiah Clawson, she was baptized at Claverack, Columbia County, New York, in 1807, and her family moved to the town of Hunter in Greene County about 1812. She died in 1831, aged 27, and is buried at East Jewett.

Baptized at the Reformed Church (index; the parents in the entry not yet read). Her gravestone's age, 27 years 1 month 3 days at her death on 29 Jul 1831, puts her birth about 26 June 1804, so she was baptized at about three.

Her gravestone, as the East Kill Valley Genealogy prints it: "d. 29 Jul. 1831, aged 27 yrs. 1 mo. 3 d." Gilmore, from Plume, has 28 Jul 1834; the stone is better.

Family

Father
Josiah Clawson d. bef. 1827

A Greene County deed of 29 Oct 1827 names "John and Catherine Fairchild and others" as "heirs at law" of Isiah Classon, deceased (Gilmore; the deed itself not seen). That Isiah is the Josiah Clawson of Hunter, from Claverack, in Beers is inferred.

Spouse
John Fairchild 1803–1867 · married 1825

Named with him among the heirs at law of Isiah Classon in a Greene County deed of 29 Oct 1827 (Gilmore); her gravestone calls her "wife of JOHN FAIRCHILD."

Notes

First wife of John Fairchild and mother of Adeline (Fairchild) Bell. Her family came from Claverack, Columbia County, where she was baptized in 1807, to the town of Hunter in Greene County, where her father Josiah Clawson took up a lease about 1812 (source). She married John Fairchild, son of Jonathan of East Jewett, in 1825 by Plume’s account, and the deed of 1827 that names them among her father’s heirs is Gilmore’s proof of the marriage (source). Her children, as Gilmore lists them, were William Henry (born 15 June 1827 in Hunter), Adeline Asenath (27 March 1829) and Marietta.

She died in July 1831, aged 27, and was buried in the Old Cemetery at East Jewett: “CATHERINE (CLAWSON) wife of JOHN FAIRCHILD d. 29 Jul. 1831, aged 27 yrs. 1 mo. 3 d.” (source). John then married her sister Sally Ann Clawson, about 1836 by the East Kill Valley Genealogy.

The Ancestry tree’s dates for her, born 26 Jun 1814 in Canada and died 2 Apr 1900 at Heart Prairie, Wisconsin, are not hers: the day and month of the birth match her stone, in a wrong year, and the death in 1900 belongs to someone else.

Open questions

  • Her death year: the stone (1831) or Plume (1834). Gilmore’s list of her children, as far as the archive.org text can be read, includes “Marietta b. 6 Aug 1831” beside “Maryette b. ca 1828” from the census; a birth in August 1831 would not fit a death in July 1831.
  • Her mother.
