Mary Wheeler

Also Mary Fairchild · Mary Beach · Mary Yale

Daughter of Moses Wheeler, the Stratford ferryman, born at Stratford, Connecticut, in 1655. She married first Samuel Fairchild and bore him five children, probably among them Jonathan (1692); widowed in 1704/5, she married Benjamin Beach and then Thomas Yale, and died at Wallingford in 1747. The family's descent from her rests on Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett being her great-grandson, which is possible only.

Notes

Daughter of Moses Wheeler, the Stratford ferryman, and wife successively of Samuel Fairchild, Benjamin Beach and Thomas Yale. In his will of 19 February 1689/90 her father left her “a brasse kettle holding ten or twelve Galons more or lesse. The abridgment of the martyr booke, and Mr Brookes his devices of sathan” (source): an abridged Foxe’s Book of Martyrs and, very probably, Thomas Brooks’s Precious Remedies against Satan’s Devices (1652).

She married Samuel Fairchild, a ship’s carpenter like her father, and bore him Robert (1681), Samuel, Anna, Edward and Jonathan (1692). Widowed in January 1704/5, she married Benjamin Beach Sen. of Stratford on 5 December 1705, and Thomas Yale at Wallingford on 31 July 1716 (source). In January 1712/13, fifteen years after her father’s death, his estate was still unsettled, and “Nathan Wheeler and Samuel Fairchild” (her son, her husband being dead) “were appointed administrators to bring the matter to a final issue”; at the distribution of 14 April 1719 a single share, twenty-one and a third acres and one and a third sheep, went “to Mistress Mary (Yeal?)” (source). She died at Wallingford on 17 August 1747.

The family’s descent from her rests on the identification of Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett with her great-grandson Jonathan, born at Norwalk in 1744, which is only possible (see Jonathan Fairchild).
