Eleanor Whitney

Also Eleanor Fairchild

Wife of Jonathan Fairchild, a fuller and cloth-dresser of Norwalk, Connecticut, whom she married in 1717, and probably the mother of Thomas Fairchild. Born at Norwalk in 1693/4, probably a daughter of John Whitney, the miller, and Elizabeth Smith, she died there in 1777, aged nearly 82. Her grandson Jonathan, born in 1744, was possibly the Jonathan Fairchild who settled East Jewett, New York.

Notes

Wife of Jonathan Fairchild of Norwalk and mother of Thomas Fairchild. A miller’s daughter who married a fuller: her grandfather Henry Whitney built Norwalk’s corn mill at the falls in 1665, and her father John, “the miller,” built a fulling mill there, which he gave to her brother John in 1707 (source). She married Jonathan Fairchild, “a fuller and cloth-dresser, of Norwalk,” on 13 June 1717, and they were members of the First Congregational Church in 1725. He died in 1772; she died at Norwalk on 25 January 1777, “aged 81 years, 11 months, and 19 days; from which facts, the date of her birth has been computed. They were buried in one of the old cemeteries at Norwalk.”

The family’s descent from her rests on the identification of Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett with her grandson Jonathan, born at Norwalk in 1744, which is only possible (see Jonathan Fairchild).
