Jotham Chapin

Born at Monson, Massachusetts, in 1764, probably the eldest son of Lt. Jonathan Chapin and Abigail Munn, he went west in 1792 with his brother-in-law David Wood and was one of the first settlers of Winfield, Herkimer County, New York. He married Ann Waite and died at Winfield in 1838. Probably the father of Loring Chapin and so the grandfather of Dr. Marvin Chapin.

Notes

Grandfather of Dr. Marvin Chapin, and one of the first settlers of Winfield, New York. The eldest son of Lt. Jonathan Chapin and Abigail Munn, he was born at Monson in 1764 (source). In 1792 he went west with the husband of his sister Persis: “In 1792 David Wood removed with his brother-in-law, Jotham Chapin, from Monson, Hampden county, Mass., being then twenty-seven years of age, and purchased of John I. Morgan two farms, then being in a wilderness” (source, p. 379). The same history, in another passage, has “In the summer of 1792 David Wood and Jonathan Chapin settled on the south side of the stream, and in 1793 Deacon Charles Burt” followed (p. 369); Charles Burt married Jotham’s sister Anna in 1797. One of the two Wood farms became “the Palmer farm,” long owned by Vose Palmer, the husband of Jotham’s daughter Sally.

He married Ann Waite. The Chapin Book gives three children: Loring (b. 26 Feb 1790), Sally (1791-1868, Mrs. Vose Palmer, of West Winfield) and Marvin, who died on 11 Mar 1816, aged 18, and was buried in the Monson Cemetery. Jotham is buried in the West Winfield Cemetery (source).

Open questions

  • WikiTree gives him one child only, “Anna Chapin,” b. 3 May 1790 at Plainfield, Otsego County, a date that cannot stand beside Loring’s birth on 26 Feb 1790. The Chapin Book and the DAR application agree on Loring; one of the two children is misattached.
  • The Monson town records would confirm his birth of 7 Dec 1764.
