Notes

Mother of Dr. Marvin Chapin: one of the six daughters of Charles Brace, who “kept in 1794, what was probably the first Inn in the town” of Winfield, and a granddaughter of Capt. Abel Brace, who had brought his family of fourteen children there from Connecticut the year before. She was born at Winfield in 1795 and married Loring Chapin there in 1815 (source).

Her parentage rests on three sources that agree: The Chapin Book (1924), “Sarah (Sally) Brace, dau. Charles & Persis (Brandegee) Brace, b. Nov. 3, 1795, Winfield, d. 1871, Silver Creek”; the DAR application of her granddaughter Ella (Chapin) Browne (1900); and the Brace Lineage (1927), written from the Brace side, which gives Charles Brace “six daughters: Nancy (Gage); Pursis (Avery); Polly (Woodruff); Lovina (Hewitt); Sally (Chapin); Candace (Angel)” (source). Her children’s names repeat her family’s: Woodruff, Persis Brandegee and Charles Brace Chapin. She outlived her husband by seven years and died at Silver Creek in 1871.
