Ephraim Raymond

Also Ephraim Raymond Sr.

Of Bedford, Westchester County, New York, whose will of 1765 provided for his wife Mary, four sons, two daughters and a granddaughter Sarah he had brought up, probably Sarah Fairchild. Probably the Ephraim born at Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1701 to Samuel Raymond and Judith Palmer, he died at Bedford in 1765. Probably the father of Ann (Raymond) Fairchild, wife of Thomas Fairchild.

between 6 Feb and 1 Apr 1765, Bedford, Westchester County, New York

Family

Father
Samuel Raymond 1673–1738

Samuel Raymond's will of 23 Oct 1738 names a son Ephraim, born at Norwalk 9 Sep 1701. That he is Ephraim of Bedford is the 1969 genealogy's identification; it fits, as he is the only Ephraim of the right age at Norwalk and his sons were named Samuel and Ephraim. The 1886 genealogy only guessed that the Bedford family was "probably" from this line.

Spouse
Mary Coley 1703–1788

"My dearly beloved wife Mary" in his will; her surname Coley is from the 1969 Raymond Genealogy (citing Jacobus) and Knapp.

Notes

Of Bedford, Westchester County, New York, father of Ann (Raymond) Fairchild. His will, made “being ill and not well in body” on 6 February 1765 and proved on 1 April, left his wife Mary the house, home lot and orchard during her widowhood, with ten acres and the meadow “and one cow”; five shillings each to “my eldest son Thadeus” and “my 2d son Ephraim”; the land on the north side of the highway “where I now live” to his third son Ebenezer, and that on the south side to his fourth son Samuel. “My son Ebenezer is to pay to my eldest daughter, Ann Fairchild, £20. My son Samuel is to pay to my 2d daughter, Mary Read, £20. I leave to my grandchild Sarah, ‘that I brought up,’ £10.” His executors were Joseph Clark, his son Ephraim and his wife (source). The granddaughter he brought up was probably Sarah Fairchild, Ann’s eldest child, born at Norwalk in 1742.

His son Ephraim, born about 1730, was “2d Lt. of militia, 1775” at Bedford, and at the first independent town election, on 7 April 1784, “was elected an assessor” (source); he died at Bedford in March 1827, aged 96 (source).

The family’s descent from him rests on the identification of Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett with his grandson Jonathan, born at Norwalk in 1744, which is only possible (see Jonathan Fairchild).
