Mary Coley

Also Mary Raymond

Wife of Ephraim Raymond of Bedford, Westchester County, who left her his house and home lot in his will of 1765, and probably the mother of Ann (Raymond) Fairchild. Baptized at Fairfield, Connecticut, in 1703, she was possibly a daughter of Samuel Coley there. The family's descent from her rests on Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett being her grandson, which is possible only.

Notes

Wife of Ephraim Raymond of Bedford, Westchester County, and mother of Ann (Raymond) Fairchild. Her husband’s will of 1765 left “my dearly beloved wife Mary my house and home lot and orchard during her widowhood” and made her an executor (source). Her surname and baptism come from compiled genealogies: “EPHRAIM RAYMOND (Samuel), married Mary Coley, baptized 5 December 1703” (source), and “Mary Coley, bapt. Aug. 15, 1703, m. Ephraim Raymond,” among the children of Samuel Coley of Fairfield (source).

The family’s descent from her rests on the identification of Jonathan Fairchild of East Jewett with her grandson Jonathan, born at Norwalk in 1744, which is only possible (see Jonathan Fairchild).

Open questions

  • Her baptism date, and her parents: Jacobus, Families of Old Fairfield I:155, should settle both.
