The line

The ancestry of Hannah Read Tyler (1809-1886), wife of Capt. Nathan Low of Deer Isle and mother of Harriet Phillips Low. Her father’s side runs back through the Attleborough and Mendon Tylers to Job Tyler of Andover, the man who accused John Godfrey of witchcraft, and through her grandmother Hannah Read to the Reads, Pecks and Ides of Rehoboth, the Capron family, and the Whites, Humphreys, Macombers and Deans of Taunton and Norton. Her mother Sally Ginn’s side, if Sally was Capt. James Ginn’s daughter, runs to the Genns of the Choptank River in Maryland and, through Ann Riggs, to the Riggs, Millett, Greenaway, Stanwood, Messer, Wheeler, Yeoman, Allen and Goodale families of Gloucester, Dorchester and Salisbury.

Mollie Pfeiffer’s typescript (pp. 133-187) first named nearly all of these families. Its dates mostly match the records, but several of its links named the wrong person, and none of its gentry or royal descents (Callendar of that Ilk, Rede of Redesdale, Peck of Belton, Macomber and the Earls of Fife, Dean and Edward the Confessor, Salusbury of Lleweni, Millett of Marazion) is supported.

The line at a glance

Tyler: Job Tyler (c. 1619-aft. 1700) = Mary > Samuel (1655-1695) = Hannah > Capt. Samuel (1694/5-1759) = Mary Capron > Col. Ebenezer (1740-1811) = Hannah Read > Rowland (1780-1872) = Sally Ginn > Hannah Read Tyler (1809-1886)

Read: John Read (c. 1598-1685) = Sarah Lessie > Daniel (1655) = Hannah Peck > Capt. Daniel (1680-1740) = Elizabeth Ide > Capt. Daniel (c. 1716-1801) = Mary White > Hannah Read (1744-1822)

Peck and Ide: Joseph Peck (bp. 1587) > Joseph (bp. 1623) > Hannah Peck (1653). Nicholas Ide (d. 1690) = Martha > Timothy (1660) = Elizabeth Cooper > Elizabeth Ide (1690-1759)

White and Dean: Jonas Humphrey (d. 1662) > Susanna = Nicholas White (d. 1697) > Nicholas (d. 1727/8) = Ursula Macomber > Matthew (1676) = Damaris Dean (1689), daughter of Benjamin Dean and Sarah Williams and granddaughter of Walter Dean > Mary White (1720-1775)

Ginn: Thomas Genn (1718-1767/8) = Sicely > Capt. James Ginn (1745-1818) = Ann Riggs > Sally Ginn (1784-1834) [unresolved]

Riggs: Robert Rigg of Hawkshead > Thomas Riggs (c. 1632-1721/2) = Mary Millett > Thomas (1666-1756) = Ann Wheeler > Joshua (1706/7) = Experience Stanwood > Ann Riggs (1747)

Millett, Wheeler, Stanwood: John Greenaway > Mary = Thomas Millett. John Wheeler = Agnes Yeoman > Henry = Abigail Allen, daughter of William Allen and Ann Goodale. Philip Stanwood = Jane > John = Lydia Messer > James = Mary Davis.

  • Sally Ginn > Capt. James Ginn and Ann Riggs (possible): Mollie’s chart and a WikiTree entry against Brigham’s Tyler Genealogy, which calls Sally the daughter of “William H. Ginn, a shipbuilder of Ellsworth.” No such man has been found, and Buck’s count of James’s “six sons and six daughters” needs Sally, but no record settles it. The whole Ginn side of the tree hangs on this link.
  • James Ginn > Thomas Genn of Maryland (probable): two NEHGR notes and the Genn family study agree, but no primary record ties the Gloucester and Maine captain to the Choptank family.
  • Mary Capron’s mother is unknown: the Callender tradition, “Elizabeth Callender” and Holden’s Elizabeth Blackington have not been sorted out.
  • Capt. Daniel Read (c. 1716) > Daniel Read and Elizabeth Ide (probable): no birth record has been read, and his father had a son Daniel, born 1713, by his first wife.
  • Thomas Riggs > Robert Rigg of Hawkshead (probable): “very probable” in TAG.
  • John Wheeler’s parents and wife rest on Davis (1996), seen only as reported online.

Open questions

  • Who was Sally Ginn’s father? The Bucksport intention of 25 Feb 1804, the Orrington births, or a Ginn probate.
  • The printed Attleborough births and marriages: Ebenezer Tyler’s birth (March or May 1740), the Tyler-Capron and Tyler-Read marriage dates, and the children of Daniel Read and Elizabeth Ide.
  • Hannah’s own records: the 1832 Deer Isle marriage and her 1886 death record.
  • Bristol County probate: Ebenezer Tyler (1811), Hannah (Read) Tyler (1822, the silver spoon), Banfield Capron (13:258-261), Benjamin Dean (1725), Nicholas White (1728).
  • Did Capt. James Ginn hold enslaved people at Bucksport, as Mollie says? No record has been found: check the Hancock County deeds and probate and the 1800 and 1810 censuses.
  • Job Tyler’s origin; Thomas Millett’s and John Greenaway’s English origins.
