Notes
Sea captain, the eldest son of Capt. Nathan Low and Hannah Read Tyler. In 1864 the town of Deer Isle paid him $100 “as a compensation for having put … a substitute into the army for three years” (Hosmer). By 1887 he lived at Beverly, Massachusetts, where his mother had died: that January his sister Harriet made him her attorney to sell her share of their mother’s Maine land, and he was guardian of his late brother Joseph’s eight children.
Mollie’s typescript puts him aboard the Paragon with his father when she was run down in September 1874. Mollie also says Major Nathan named his eldest son for Daniel Webster; it was Capt. Nathan who named this son, in 1836.
Open questions
- Was he aboard the Paragon in 1874, and was he the “brother” or the master “B. F. Law” of the Portland paper?
- His marriage (Mollie: Evelyn Webster) and his vessels.

Checked against the records
- DisprovenMajor Low named his eldest son Daniel Webster
It was his son Capt. Nathan who named his eldest son Daniel Webster, born at Deer Isle on 28 Apr 1836 (town record). The Major's eldest son was Thomas Thompson Low, born in 1802.

Unresolved. The Portland paper names the owner and master "B. F. Law" and the crew "the captain and his father and brother," which reads like a son in command with his father and a brother aboard; the Ellsworth American says "an old man and two boys." Which sons they were is unknown.
