Notes
Wife of Col. Ebenezer Tyler of Attleborough. In the autumn of 1775 her household and her parents’ lost seven people in under three weeks. By date (Attleborough VR deaths): her brother David, 12 Sept; her brother Ezra, 21 Sept; her mother Mary (White) Read, 23 Sept; her son Leander, 26 Sept; her sons Rowland and Habijah, 1 Oct. No cause is recorded.
Her younger brother Daniel, born in November 1757, was very probably the hymn-tune composer Daniel Read (1757-1836) of New Haven, whose tunes “Windham” and “Sherburne” are still sung (inference; the evidence is set out on her father’s page).
Mollie Pfeiffer recalled her lost will as saying “To my granddaughter, Hannah Read Tyler, I leave a silver spoon.” That is tradition; the will has not been found.
Open questions
- Bristol County probate, 1822: is there a will, and does it name the spoon?
Mollie's typescript
She outlived her husband by eleven years; Mollie read her will, since lost, which named her son Samuel to administer the estate and left her granddaughter Hannah Read Tyler a silver spoon.
Hannah White Read, who married Ebenezer Tyler outlived her husband by 11 years. ... The compiler read her will, then in the possession of a great aunt; she left her son Samuel to administer her property
p. 149 →Mollie's White chart gives her birth on 26 June 1744, her marriage to Col. Ebenezer Tyler on 4 May 1762, and her death on 18 Sept 1822.
