Innkeeper of Winfield, Herkimer County, New York, who kept what was probably the town's first inn in 1794. Probably the son of Capt. Notes
Father of Sarah (Sally) Brace, Mrs. Loring Chapin, and the first innkeeper of Winfield, New York. The third child of Capt. Abel Brace and Keziah Woodruff, he went with his parents and his many brothers and sisters from Connecticut to the Herkimer County frontier in 1793, and “A son, Charles, kept in 1794, what was probably the first Inn in the town” (source); the county history says the same and adds that “it is not known just where it was located” (source). At the first town meeting of Winfield, on 7 June 1816, “the snow was several inches deep on that day,” in the cold summer still remembered seventy years later, and Charles Brace was elected one of the three school commissioners.
He married Persis Brandegee (“Pursis Brandicha” in the Brace Lineage) and “had six daughters: Nancy (Gage); Pursis (Avery); Polly (Woodruff); Lovina (Hewitt); Sally (Chapin); Candace (Angel).” He died on 3 Apr 1823.
