Joseph Cole

Yeoman of Eastham, Massachusetts, born there in 1677, probably a son of John Cole and Ruth Snow, and so very probably a great-grandson of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower. He married three times, the second time Mercy Hinckley at Harwich in 1715, and in 1764, in his eighty-seventh year, gave his land to his sons Gershom and Joseph. Grandfather of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw.

Notes

Grandfather of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw. A son of John Cole and Ruth Snow of Eastham, and so, very probably, a great-grandson of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower. In 1713 and 1714/15 his father gave him land at Eastham and his right in the Harwich lands that “my Hon’d father Daniel Cole Died seized of” (record). He married three times: Elizabeth Cobb; Mercy Hinckley of Harwich, on 6 Oct 1715 (record), who bore him Mercy (24 Sept 1716), Joseph (18 May 1718) and Mary (30 Apr 1721) (record); and Rebecca (Young), widow of Abiah Harding. On 18 Apr 1764 “Joseph Cole of Eastham … yeoman” gave his land “to my two natural Sons namely, Gersham Cole, and Joseph Cole both of Eastham” (record); he was then in his eighty-seventh year. The Nickerson genealogy has a sale of all his land to the same two sons on 29 Jan 1768.
