Grandfather of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw. A son of John Cole and Ruth Snow of Eastham, and so, very probably, a great-grandson of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower. In 1713 and 1714/15 his father gave him land at Eastham and his right in the Harwich lands that "my Hon'd father Daniel Cole Died seized of" (record). He married three times: Elizabeth Cobb; Mercy Hinckley of Harwich, on 6 Oct 1715 (record), who bore him Mercy (24 Sept 1716), Joseph (18 May 1718) and Mary (30 Apr 1721) (record); and Rebecca (Young), widow of Abiah Harding. On 18 Apr 1764 "Joseph Cole of Eastham ... yeoman" gave his land "to my two natural Sons namely, Gersham Cole, and Joseph Cole both of Eastham" (record); he was then in his eighty-seventh year. The Nickerson genealogy has a sale of all his land to the same two sons on 29 Jan 1768.
Research: Cape Cod ancestry of Hope Holdershaw and Hannah Brown.
