Notes

The “half Indian” son of the family’s one story about its ancestry, told to Blackburn by Harold Keith Talbot and Vernice Trimble: his father married an Indian girl in an Indian ceremony, and, knowing how hard the child’s life would be, stole the baby and slipped out into the night. Recorded as tradition. If Ned was born about 1796-1802, the story straddles the start of Meredith’s marriage to Polly Holloway (about 1799).

The candidate is Edward Collins of Patrick County, Virginia: in 1840 a household counted white (a man 30-40, a woman 30-40, two boys); in 1850 aged 46, farmer, born North Carolina, $1,000 real estate, with Eliza, 36, Davis Collins, 21, and “Samuel Holt,” 24. He is absent from the 1830 Patrick census and present by 1840, the one Collins in that county’s cluster who arrives in the 1830s [?].

Open questions

  • Is the Patrick County Edward this Ned? Tests: Patrick marriage records, the 1860 census, the deed behind his farm.
  • Who were his parents? The story is disputed even within itself.
