Jane Maria Deyoe

Also Jane Adams · Jane M. Adams · Jane Marian Deyoe

Probably the wife of Lewis M. Adams, married in 1833, and the mother of Susan Marriah (Adams) Elliott; born in 1809, she lived at Wilton, Saratoga County, New York, and died there in 1892. Probably a daughter of Peter J. Deyoe and Elizabeth Esmond of Pittstown, through whom the family descends from the Huguenot founders of New Paltz.

Life

  1. 1809
    Born
4 Jul 1809, Pittstown, Rensselaer County, New York

Her gravestone at Loudon Cemetery, Wilton: "His Wife Jane M Adams Born July 4 1809, Died Dec 8 1892" (the Find a Grave photograph, 70659162, as the Ancestry tree carries it); the Deyo genealogy has "b. 7-4-1809," and WikiTree reads the censuses as 1808. Her parents were at Pittstown from 1810 to about 1832. The Ancestry tree has 4 Jul 1803 at Saratoga Springs.

  2. 1820
    Lived
    Pittstown, Rensselaer County, New York

Grew up in her father Peter J. Deyoe's household at Pittstown, where the family lived until about 1832.

  3. 1833
    Married Lewis M. Adams
    14 Nov 1833

From the Saratoga Sentinel, as the Deyo genealogy cites it.

  4. 1892
    Died
8 Dec 1892, Wilton, Saratoga County, New York

The Deyo genealogy's "d. 11-14-1843" is an error, very probably a slip for her marriage date: she bore a daughter in 1852 and is in the censuses of 1850-1865.

Family

Father
Peter J. Deyoe 1787–1857

The Deyo genealogy (1958) has "G-160 JANE MARIA, b. 7-4-1809 ... m. 11-14-1833 LEWIS M. ADAMS" under "F-86 PETER J. m. Elizabeth Esmond," lineage "James-Peter-Jacobus-Christian"; her brother was A. I. Esmond Deyoe. Peter J.'s probate (Saratoga, 1857) would settle it.

Notes

Mother of Susan (Adams) Elliott and great-grandmother of Cudge Ellingwood. Born on 4 July 1809, she was probably the daughter of Peter J. Deyoe and Elizabeth Esmond of Pittstown, Rensselaer County. She married Lewis M. Adams on 14 Nov 1833, as the Saratoga Sentinel announced it (source), and lived with him at Wilton for the rest of her life.

Through her the Ellingwoods descend from the Huguenot founders of New Paltz: her father’s line runs James Deyoe, Peter Deyo of Pittstown (bp. 1739), Jacobus, Christian, and Pierre Deyo, a patentee of 1677, son of Chrétien Deyo, another. The Saratoga links rest on will abstracts in the 1958 genealogy, and one has a conflict (see James Deyoe), so the line is probable (research/ellingwood/Ellingwood_Wives_Families.md).
