Holbrook Master Family Tree

Master reference for the Holbrook line, from Thomas Holbrooke of Norton Malreward and his son William Holbrooke of Glastonbury to Frances Fairchild Holbrook. It sits beside the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree and follows the same layout, so it survives any font, page width or paste.

Last revised: 1 October 2026 (sixth revision that day: William's 1617 deposition, which gives his birthplace as Norton Malreward, and the abstracted wills of Thomas Holbrooke of Norton Malreward (1571/2) and his widow Edith of Compton Dando (1592), which add a generation (Part One); fifth revision: the PCC wills of the north Somerset Holbrookes (Part Four); fourth revision: Richard B. Sr.'s death in May 1894; third revision: causes of death for Gideon (d. 1852) and his son Gideon H., the 1779 guardianships, and Richard B. Sr.'s and Jr.'s dates; earlier that day: Gideon's gravestone age, Elisha's first wife, and the death of John (b. 1686) at Eastham). Built from the third and fourth research passes recorded in early-holbrook-family-england.md (English side) and from the New England records checked on 1 October 2026 (Part Two).

The line at a glance Thomas Holbrooke of Norton Malreward (d. 1571/2) > William Holbrooke of Glastonbury (c. 1551-1625/6) > Thomas, the immigrant (d. Weymouth, by 1677) > Capt. John (1618-1699) > John (1650-1731) > Capt. John (1686-by 1749) > Deacon Elisha (1716-1779) > Capt. Gideon (c. 1765-1842) > Capt. Richard Blackmer Sr. (1821-1894) > Capt. Richard Blackmer Jr. (1872-after 1919) > Richard Clifford (1902-1955) > Frances Fairchild (b. 1931)

Strength of each step

Step Tier What supports it
Thomas of Norton Malreward > William [I], about 85% William's deposition of 9 May 1617 (abstract in Spear, vol. 26): born at Norton Malreward about 1551-2, then 20 years at Compton Dando, then 19 at Glastonbury. Thomas's will (11 Jan 1571/2, known from abstracts) names a son William and leaves him the lease of the park at Compton Dando; Thomas's widow Edith of Compton Dando (will 1592) names her son William, and a William Holbrooke was her overseer and witness. No other William of the right age and place is known. Davis (1945), without the deposition, had made William a grandson through John the younger, with a question mark
William > Thomas [D] William's will (1625) names son Thomas and grandson Thomas Jr.; Thomas's marriage (1616) and his sons' baptisms (1618, 1620) are in the St John's register
Thomas > Capt. John [D] Baptised at St John's 1618 as son of Thomas; on the 1635 passenger list with his parents; Thomas's will (1668) names "eldest son John" as executor
Capt. John > John (1650) [D] Capt. John's will (1699) names his son John "who has a wife Abigail"
John (1650) > John (1686) [D] Scituate VR: "John, s. John, Nov. 19, 1686"; the 1699 will names a grandson John among son John's children
John (1686) > Elisha [D] birth, [I] identity, about 95% Scituate VR: "Elisha, s. Jo[h]n Jr. and Sarah, May 25, 1716." The father moved to Eastham: "John Holbrook of Scituate... now of Eastham," gentleman (court records, 1736-1738), and "Capt. John Holbrook late of Eastham, Gent., deceased" (Barnstable probate, 1749). His other sons turn up there too: John Jr. of Eastham, mariner (1739-1742), Thomas "late of Eastham," yeoman (d. by 1764), and Ezekiel, who married a sister of Elisha's wife. The rival claim, that Elisha was a son of Eliphalet son of Peter, is set out in Part Five
Elisha > Gideon [C] plus [I], about 80-85% Davis (1899) and Radasch (1973) both call Gideon a son of Elisha. Gideon was born at Wellfleet (his daughter Mary's 1899 death record) about 1765 (his gravestone: "Æ. 76 Y'rs" at his death in January 1842), while Elisha's first wife Sarah was living. At Plymouth he jointly owned a house (sold 1795) and ships with Elisha's eldest son Eliphalet, and he named sons Elisha and Eliphalet. No record yet found that names his father
Gideon > Richard B. Sr. [D] Gideon's will (1841, proved 1842) names son Richard B. Holbrook; Richard's 1855 deed calls Gideon "my late father" and Elisha "my brother"; Richard was in his widowed mother Nancy's household in 1850
Richard B. Sr. > Richard B. Jr. [D] 1880 census, Island County: a son aged 7 in the household of R. B. and Harriet Holbrook; Mollie's 1898 marriage record names her parents as Richard B. and Harriet P. (Lowe) Holbrook
Richard B. Jr. and below per the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree and family records

Part One: Norton Malreward, Compton Dando and Glastonbury, Somerset

  • Thomas Holbrooke "the elder" of Norton Malreward (c. 1500 - 1571/2)

    • b. c. 1500 (Davis's estimate) [C], parents unknown; bur. 11 Mar 1571/2, Norton Malreward ("Thomas Holbroke the elder," Spear's transcript; "Thomas Holbrok Senior," FamilySearch index) [D]
    • m. (1) unknown, perhaps a daughter of Nicholas and Alice Derell of Marksbury [I]; m. (2) by about 1550, Edith, widow of ___ Sanders (d. Compton Dando, will 12 Nov 1592, proved 13 Feb 1592/3, original SHC D/D/ct/1/H/135) [D]
    • Note: Davis (1945, pp. 125-127) lists his children as John the elder, Thomas and Margery ("possibly the Margery Smith mentioned in her step-mother's will"), and, "by wife Edith," John the younger, William and Robert [C]. Yeoman. "Thomas Holbroke of Norton Malerward," holder of £10 and a yearling for Nicholas Derell of Marksbury and overseer of his will (1546), and "my sonne in lawe" in the will of Alice Derell (1551/2), which left cows to his children John and Johan [D]. Charged with a bow and a sheaf of arrows in the Norton Malreward tithing at the 1569 musters [D]. Will dated 11 Jan 1571/2, proved at Wells; the original is lost, but an abstract survives in SHC DD/X/HBS/1 and is summarised in Davis (1945), pp. 125-127 [D, printed abstract]. It names sons John the elder (eldest), Thomas, William, John the younger and Robert, daughter Margery, wife Edith (executrix) and "his wife's son" Richard Sanders; leaves leases at Compton Dando of a fee farm (to Thomas, with remainders to John the younger, William and Robert), a farm with a tenement called Cases and a cottage called Busshes (to Robert) and "the park" (to William), and a horse to be kept there for Thomas for life, with Edith to have the use of the farm and park for her widowhood at 12s. a year to each son; overseers Robert Aprice of Weston, John Bushe of Butcombe, John Flower of Phillips Norton and his eldest son John; witnesses Thomas Dale of Dundry, John White of Norton Malreward and Richard Holbrooke of Stanton Prior. Whether he was a son or grandson of Roger Holbroke of Chew (will 1503), whose son Thomas was his executor, is not known [I].
    • John "the elder" (c. 1530s? - ?): child in the Derell wills; m. 28 Nov 1556, Norton Malreward, Elen Saunders (probably the "Elenor wife of John Holbrooke" bur. there 28 July 1558); children baptised at Norton Malreward 1558-1581 (Thomas, John, Johan, John, Thomas, Arthur, Alexander or Ales, Elenor, Judith, Sara, Ursula, Susane); possibly the John Holbrooke bur. Norton Malreward 30 June 1608 [D baptisms; I identity]
    • Johan (? - ?): child in the Derell wills, 1546-1552 [D]
    • Thomas (? - ?): £5, a colt and the Compton Dando fee farm, 1571/2; a "John, son of Thomas," bapt. Norton Malreward 23 June 1563, may be his [D will; I baptism]
    • William Holbrooke (c. 1551-2 - 1625/6): continues below
    • John "the younger" (? - ?): £5 and remainders to the Compton Dando holdings, 1571/2; probably the son John who was Edith's residuary legatee and executor, 1592 [D]
    • Margery (bapt. 1 Sept 1555, Norton Malreward - ?): £10, 1571/2 [D]
    • Robert (bapt. 13 or 14 Mar 1557/8 or 1558/9, Norton Malreward - 1617): the Compton Dando farm, 1571/2; daughter Melior bapt. Compton Dando 4 Oct 1605; of Queen Charlton by 1609 (son Robert bapt. there 4 Nov 1609); will 15 or 16 Mar 1616/17, proved 3 July 1617 (TNA PROB 11/130/32), naming wife Elnor, son Robert, daughters Jone, Katherine and Milliard (Melior), and a nephew "William Holbroke the sonne of John Holbrooke my brother deceased"; bur. Queen Charlton 27 Mar 1616/17 (index year 1616) [D; I that he was Edith's son]
    • Stepsons: Richard Sanders (Sandes) and Thomas Sandes, Edith's sons by her first husband [D]
    • Link to William: [I], about 85%. See the table above and early-holbrook-family-england.md, section 5A.
  • William Holbrooke "the elder" (c. 1551-2 - 1625/6)

    • b. c. 1551-2, Norton Malreward, Somerset (his deposition of 9 May 1617, "aged 65," abstracted in Spear, vol. 26) [D]; lived at Compton Dando c. 1578-1598 and in St John's parish, Glastonbury, from c. 1598 (same deposition) [D]; d. between 11 Dec 1625 and 1 Feb 1625/6, Glastonbury, Somerset. (Weaver 1928 and the FamilySearch tree give b. c. 1560-1562 [C], now superseded.)
    • m. probably Edith (bur. 11 June 1612, St John's, Glastonbury) [I]; maiden name unknown. The "Edith Saunders" of online trees is probably a mix-up with his mother [I]
    • Note: Yeoman. Lessee with his brothers of the family's Compton Dando holdings: his father's will gave him "the park" there (1571/2), and the Compton Dando leases involving the "Holbrooke family of Glastonbury" begin in 1577 (SHC DD/BR/su/6) [D; I that the 1577 lease is his]. Overseer and witness of his mother Edith's will at Compton Dando, 1592 [D, abstract; I identity]. Overseer of the will of Thomas Coles of Glastonbury, 7 Mar 1602/3 (Wells Registered Wills 32:16, abstract in Weaver 1928) [D]. "Of Edgerley in Glastonbury" in the subsidy of 1620 (Davis 1945) [D]. Deponent in a Wells church-court tithe case, 9 May 1617 [D]. His own will, dated 11 Dec 1625 and proved 1 Feb 1625/6, survives as an original (SHC D/D/ct/1/H/137) [D]. It names sons Thomas, John "if he be livinge" and William the younger, daughter Basell, and grandsons Thomas Holbrook Jr., Edmund Tyly and Clement Weaver Jr.; son William executor; Clement Weaver Sr. and Thomas Tylye overseers (Lord; Davis gives the overseers as Thomas Holbrooke, Clement Weaver the elder and Thomas "Eyly"). An abstract is also in SHC DD/X/HBS/1, very probably a copy of the fifteen Holbrooke will abstracts Davis placed in the library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Davis (1945, p. 128) summarises it in detail: two kyne to Thomas in place of £7 10s. owed him; 4 marks to Basill from the sale of his bay mare; 10s. to each child, "men as well as women"; the ground at the Moor to John, or if he was dead to the three grandsons; residue to William the younger, executor.
    • Link: [I], about 85%, son of Thomas of Norton Malreward and probably (about 75%) of Edith.
    • Children born before about 1598 were probably born at Compton Dando, where no register or bishop's transcript survives before 1602/3 [I].
    • Joan (c. 1587 - ?): m. (1) St John's, 8 May 1605 [index; Weaver and Lord give 3 June 1605], Nicholas Bennett alias Illary (bur. 20 Mar 1605/6), son Nicholas Bennett bapt. 22 Mar 1605/6; m. (2) 14 Jan 1609/10 Randall Gylles (bur. 29 Oct 1656), daughter Alice Gylles bapt. 23 June 1611 [D marriages and baptisms; C that she was William's daughter]
    • Elizabeth (c. 1590 - ?): m. 12 Sep 1611, St John's (the index also has the marriage under 1610), Thomas Tylye, overseer of the will; children William bapt. 7 Dec 1614, Edmund bapt. 8 July 1617, Mary bapt. 23 Apr 1620 [D; Edmund is the grandson "Edmund Tyly" of the will]
    • Thomas Holbrook (c. 1589-94 - by 1677): continues in Part Two
    • John (c. 1595 - ?): left to inherit the "grounds att yee moore geate" if living; Weaver: he "seems to have left home before his father made his will"; Lord places him in Weymouth by 1627 [C]
    • Rebecca (c. 1597 - ?): m. 19 May 1617, St John's, Clement Weaver (b. c. 1590, son of Thomas Weaver of Glastonbury); they emigrated, settled beside Thomas at Weymouth, and Clement later lived at Newport, Rhode Island; children Clement (b. bef. 1625, the grandson of the will), Elner bapt. 10 Sep 1623 at St Benedict's, Elizabeth (m. Thomas Dungan) [D marriage, C the rest]
    • William the younger (c. 1600 - ?): executor and residuary legatee, 1625; daughter Mary bapt. 28 Jan 1629/30 (Weaver 1928; Lord prints "29 June 1629/30") [D]

    • "Julia, daughter of William," bapt. 25 Mar 1603 (FamilySearch index): Davis (1945) reads the same entry as the baptism of Basell ("Bazell (a daughter)"), so it is very probably Basell's baptism misread [D]
    • Possible kinswoman: Anna or Agnes Holbrook, m. 9 July 1610 John Notley; children Elizabeth (Sept 1610), John (Feb 1612), Johan (Sept 1618), Anna (Feb 1620) and one in 1623; Agnes Notley bur. 9 Sep 1660 [D; her relationship to William is unknown, and she is not in the will] [?]
    • Other Glastonbury Holbrookes, relationship unknown: John Holbroke, tenant of a St John's church cottage, 1574 (the earliest Holbrooke found in Glastonbury); John Holbrook, bur. 19 Aug 1609; Cecily (or Sybil) Holbrooke, widow, in Chancery over property in Glastonbury and Backwell, 1647-1654, against Samuel Gutch and others [D]

    • b. c. 1589 (deposition of 1666 giving his age as 77) or c. 1594 (three depositions, per Lord and Weaver), probably at Compton Dando, where his father lived about 1578-1598 [I] (Davis: "presumably at Eversley in Glastonbury"); d. at Weymouth, Massachusetts, shortly before 10 Mar 1676/7, when his inventory calls him lately deceased (Davis 1945) [C]; will proved 24 Apr 1677. • Link: [D] Scituate VR birth; grandfather's will, 1699.

    • Thomas, b. 7 Apr 1712 (a "Thomas, s. John" is also entered 27 June 1713): probably Thomas Holbrook "late of Eastham now Wellfleet," yeoman, d. by 1764; widow Margaret; sons Thomas and John of Wellfleet; Ezekiel Holbrook was one of the men who set off the widow's thirds (Barnstable Probate, 1764-1766)

    • b. 25 May 1716, Scituate (VR: "s. Jo[h]n Jr. and Sarah"); d. before 11 June 1779, Wellfleet, intestate
    • m. (1) int. 1 Apr 1742, m. 13 May 1742, Eastham, Sarah Mayo, daughter of Daniel Mayo Sr. of Eastham, yeoman, and his wife Mary (the marriage is indexed once as "Annah Mayo," a misreading). Daniel Mayo's will, dated 8 Nov 1754 and proved 29 Jan 1755, leaves shares to "my Daughters viz Sarah the wife of Elisha Holbrook, Martha the wife of Ezekiel Holbrook, Anna the Wife of Barnabas Young, Mary the wife of Elisha Bigford." The FamilySearch tree gives Sarah b. 6 Dec 1721, Eastham, d. 16 May 1767. (2) 1771, Wellfleet, Priscilla Newcomb (c. 1750 - c. 1830, Maine)
    • Note: His estate (Barnstable Probate, 1779-1780) was administered by his widow Priscilla; the creditors' accounts of 25-26 Nov 1779 call him "Deacon Elisha Holbrook late of Wellfleet," and Priscilla complained that his son Eliphalet was holding five bushels of salt and other goods of the estate. On 11-18 June 1779 she was made guardian of the minor children Daniel, Sarah, Joseph and Ezekiel, and "Eliphalet Holbrook of Wellfleet... Yeoman" was made guardian of the youngest, Jeremiah. Only about two pounds remained after debts, so the estate was settled on her. Earlier, in a Middlesex County suit of December 1766, he was "Elisha Holbrook of Wellfleet in the County of Barnstable, Mariner." No guardianship was found for Gideon, who would have been about 13 or 14 in 1779.

    • Capt. Eliphalet (c. 1745 - 1815): of Wellfleet, then Plymouth by 1790; m. 31 Oct 1771, Wellfleet, Mary Covell (c. 1751 - 20 Sep 1842); shipowner; d. 7 Feb 1815, Plymouth, aged 70 (Burial Hill); father of the other Plymouth Gideon (Part Four)
    • Elisha (c. 1748 - ?)
    • David (30 May 1750 - 1831): d. Eastham
    • Jonathan (bef. 1755 - aft. 1800): m. Mercy; children b. Wellfleet 1783-1788
    • Gideon Holbrook (c. 1765 - 1842): next entry
    • Mary (bef. 1767 - ?)
    • By Priscilla (the 1779 guardianships): Daniel (c. 1772 - 1863, Plymouth, Maine), Sarah (c. 1773 - bef. 1795), Joseph (1774 - 1843), Ezekiel (1776 - 1863, Boothbay, Maine), Jeremiah (c. 1778-79)
  • Capt. Gideon Holbrook (c. 1765 - 1842)

    • b. c. 1765, Wellfleet (the place from his daughter Mary's 1899 death record; no birth record found); d. 23 Jan 1842, Plymouth; bur. Manomet Cemetery, plot 9D. His stone reads "GIDEON HOLBROOK / Died / Jan. 23, 1842 / Æ. 76 Y'rs." (Æ. stands for aetatis, "aged"), which puts his birth between Jan 1765 and Jan 1766. Find a Grave (40957263) shows "1786 (aged 55-56)," a misreading of the 76 that matches his nephew's birth year; the photograph taken in raking light shows 76 clearly
    • m. (1) int. 29 Dec 1787, m. 3 Apr 1788 (as indexed), Plymouth, Sarah "Sally" Clark (b. 13 Feb 1765, Plymouth, daughter of James Clark Jr. and Hannah Swift; d. 1 Mar 1818; her stone at Manomet is transcribed "aged 33," almost certainly 53); (2) int. 29 Nov 1818, m. Dec 1818, Plymouth, "Mrs. Nancy Blackman" or Blackmer, born Nancy Ellis (b. 21 Oct 1781, Plymouth, daughter of George Ellis and Phebe Stevens; widow of Richard Blackmer; d. 29 Jan 1864, Plymouth, a widow, aged 82y 3m 8d; bur. Manomet)
    • Note: Plymouth mariner and shipmaster: master of the schooner Eagle in 1790 and 1791 and of the brigantine William in 1794; co-owner with Eliphalet Holbrook and Jesse Harlow of a Plymouth schooner in 1803-1804. He and Eliphalet, "both of Plymouth... Mariner[s]," sold "our Dwelling house" at Monument Ponds, which they had bought together from Capt. Samuel Hovey, to Caleb Bartlett on 20 Nov 1795. (A Gideon who was master and co-owner of the Endeavour with Eliphalet in 1809 could be this Gideon or his nephew.) "Capt." on the gravestones of his wife Sally and daughter Mary; "gentleman" at probate. Counted in 1820 as "Gideon Holbrook," beside a younger "Gideon Holbrook, Junior" who was his nephew. His will, dated 18 June 1841 and proved in April 1842 (Plymouth Probate; estate division in Book 92, p. 250), leaves the residue in nine equal shares to Lois Tribble, Martha Covington, Betsey Morton, Gideon, Richard B., Elisha, Polly and Eliphalet, and his granddaughter Jerusha, daughter of his late daughter Harriet Davie; wife Nancy executor; inventory $3,991.50. A Gideon Holbrook was a Plymouth selectman in 1817, 1818, 1819 and 1820 (list of selectmen in D. Hamilton Hurd, History of Plymouth County, 1884); whether this Gideon or his nephew is not settled.

    • By Nancy Ellis:
    • Gideon (c. 1819 - 30 Nov 1852): "Holbrook G., 2d, Monument Ponds, seaman" (Plymouth directory, 1846); m. 27 July 1846, Plymouth, Lucretia W. Bartlett (daughter of Lemuel and Lucy); in 1850 living at Plymouth with Lucretia, their son Gideon H. and Lucretia's mother Lucy Bartlett. Died at Plymouth, 30 Nov 1852, aged 33, of "Chagres fever" (state copy of the Plymouth death return, 1852, no. 85) [D], the name then used for the malaria or yellow fever caught crossing the Isthmus of Panama by the Chagres River, the usual gold-rush route to and from California. The record does not say he made the crossing. He died intestate; in December 1853 David Clark of Plymouth, at the request of "the widow and heir at law," was made administrator of "Gideon Holbrook 2nd... late of Plymouth, Mariner" (Plymouth Probate) [D]. Gideon H. Holbrook (b. 28 Nov 1849; d. 19 Sep 1853, of dysentery, aged 3y 11m by the register, parents "Gideon Holbrook"; 1853 return, no. 113) [D] is buried beside his father at Manomet. Dysentery killed a run of Plymouth children that August and September. (The town birth index names Gideon H.'s mother "Pamelia," probably a misreading; the census and the burial row point to Lucretia.) Lucretia m. (2) 1853 David Clark
    • Richard Blackmer Holbrook (1821 - 1894): next entry
    • Elisha (c. Dec 1823 - 7 June 1887): at Manomet until at least 1864, buying out several siblings' shares of the estate; later in California. His cenotaph at Manomet reads "Died at Port Harford Cal. June 7, 1887, Aged 63 y'rs 5 mo's 11 days" (Port Harford is now Port San Luis, San Luis Obispo Co.); a San Francisco funeral record of 8 June 1887 calls him single, a laborer of Santa Rosa, born in Massachusetts c. 1824
    • Mary "Polly" (9 Mar 1826 - 5 Jan 1899): unmarried; lived with her brother Eliphalet at Manomet; her death record names her father Gideon Holbrook, born Wellfleet, and mother Nancy Ellis
    • Eliphalet (19 Oct 1828 - 25 Mar 1920): m. 11 Oct 1854, Worcester, Harriet Rice (1829-1902); of Manomet; children M. Elizabeth (1855-1946), Hattie Maria (1857-1863), George Eliphalet (1859-1866), Etta May (1865-1924) and Florence (1871-1944); buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Plymouth (Find a Grave 103737789)
  • Capt. Richard Blackmer Holbrook Sr. (1821 - 1894)

    • b. 7 Aug 1821, Plymouth (Manomet) [D]; d. May 1894, Coupeville, Island County, Washington [D]; bur. Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville, lot 59. Source for both dates: the annual list of Washington pioneers who had died in the past year, from the report of Secretary Prosch to the pioneers' reunion at Tacoma, printed in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 18 Nov 1894, p. 11: "Richard B. Holbrook died in Coupeville, Island county, in May, 1894. He was born in Plymouth, Mass., August 7, 1821; arrived in California March 4, 1851, and came to Puget sound in April, 1852, soon thereafter locating on Whidby island." His census ages (27 in 1850, 48 in 1870, 58 in 1880) fit the birth date; the FamilySearch tree's 14 May 1894 fits the month
    • m. 24 Dec 1860, Steilacoom, Washington Territory, Harriet Phillips Lowe (b. 12 June 1834, Deer Isle, Maine; d. 26 Nov 1918, Seattle)
    • Note: In his widowed mother's household at Plymouth in the census taken there on 27 Aug 1850: "Richard Holbrook, 27, Seaman," real estate $200, beside his brother Elisha, 25, machinist [D]. The family account (Mollie's typescript, as retold in the Collins-Reed history) is that he gave up command of a ship, sailed round Cape Horn and reached California in 1850, traded produce by sloop out of San Francisco, lost his savings while ill with typhoid, and went north to Puget Sound [T]. The 1894 necrology puts his arrival in California on 4 Mar 1851, not in 1850, which fits his being at home in Plymouth in August 1850 [D]. His donation land claim affidavit (20 Mar 1855) says he reached Oregon on 10 Apr 1852 and had lived on his Whidbey Island claim since 5 May 1852 (Olympia donation certificate no. 365) [D]. In 1855, "now resident" in the West, he sold to "my brother Elisha Holbrook" the share "of my late father Gideon Holbrook" assigned to him in the estate division. Named as an heir "of Coveland, Washington Territory" in a Plymouth probate file of 1869, probably his mother's. Farmer in 1880. On 29 Jan 1890 he and Harriet, "residing at Coupeville," witnessed the will of their neighbor Ella A. Tenney; when it was proved after her death on 8 Dec 1898, Harriet testified but R. B. Holbrook's handwriting had to be proved, as he was by then dead [D].
    • The "1830-1898" on the memorial marker at Sunnyside ("In memoriam / Holbrook / Captain Richard B. 1830-1898 / His wife Harriet L. 1834-1918 / Pioneers"), a later stone, is wrong on both dates, and the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree, the family book and Find a Grave memorial 11548347 follow it. Island County's register of deaths has no entry for him; registration was patchy then.
    • Link: [D] his father's will, 1841; his 1855 deed; the 1850 census.
    • Horace Greeley (1863 - 1939): b. 1 June 1863 (death record) or 3 Jan 1863 (FamilySearch tree), Coveland; m. 21 Dec 1896, Island County, Ada M. James (1877-1935); d. 4 July 1939, Coupeville, carpenter and engineer
    • Josephine (1865 - Aug 1870): buried Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville (Find a Grave index) [C]
    • Mollie Frances (1870 - 1954): b. 4 Dec 1870, Coveland; m. 15 June 1898, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Emil Charles Pfeiffer (her residence given as Coupeville, Wash.; parents Richard B. and Harriet P. Lowe) [D]; compiler of the family typescript; d. 24 Feb 1954, Mount Vernon, Washington
    • Nancy (c. 1871) and Mary (c. 1872): in the FamilySearch tree with no sources. Probably not his children: the 1880 census lists only Horace, Mollie and Richard, and there is no room for two births between Mollie (Dec 1870) and Richard Jr. (Sept 1872) [?]
    • Richard Blackmer Holbrook Jr. (1872 - after 1919): next entry
  • Capt. Richard Blackmer Holbrook Jr. (1872 - after 1919)

    • b. 16 Sep 1872, San de Fuca, Whidbey Island. The 1880 census (aged 7 on 1 June 1880) and the Pioneers of Alaska notice of 1917 ("born on Whidby Island, Washington, in September, 1872") both fit 1872; the FamilySearch tree's 1873 does not. Last traced alive Nov 1918 (his mother's death at his house) and in the 1919 Seattle directory
    • m. 28 Sep 1900, Seattle, Jessie Lorene Clifford (1876 - 1948)
    • Note: Steamboat master on Puget Sound. The FamilySearch tree attaches a 1923 death at Bismarck, North Dakota, which belongs to another Richard Holbrook. Full entry in the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree.
    • Richard Clifford Holbrook (1902 - 1955), m. May 1927 Lucille M. McMillan
      • Frances Fairchild Holbrook (b. 1931)

Part Three: Families who married in

At Glastonbury

  • Powyes. Jane, wife of Thomas. Pane-Joyce gives her parents as William Powyes (b. c. 1568) and Elizabeth [C]. The Glastonbury index has only the 1616 marriage.
  • Weaver. Thomas Weaver, of Glastonbury from at least 1590 to 1632, father of Clement; probably the husband of the Margaret Weaver who was a legatee of Nicholas Adams of St Benedict's, butcher (1586), and executrix of his widow Margaret (1588/9) [C, Weaver 1928]. Four other Weavers of the same generation lived in Glastonbury and Walton about 1590: John (churchwarden of Walton, 1608), Richard, Robert of Walton (will proved 1607) and William (m. Florence, then Blanch Davis, 1608). Clement Gutch Sr. of St John's, in his will of 21 Oct 1632 (Wells Registered Wills 47:169), left legacies to "Clement, son of Thomas Weaver," Blanch Weaver and Margaret daughter of William Weaver.
  • Tylye. Thomas Tylye, son-in-law and overseer, 1625. Lord says that in 1379 a William Holbrook made William Tylye "of Glastonbury Abbey" his heir [C, source not identified]. A Thomas and Edith Tylye held land at Brewham in 1368 (SHC DD/WHh/593) [D, context only].
  • Bennett alias Illary, and Gylles. Joan's two husbands (Part One).
  • Notley. John Notley, husband of Anna or Agnes Holbrook (Part One).
  • Wrinkmore. Henry Wrinkmore of Glastonbury, yeoman, took a lease of Godney Drove in 1593 (SHC DD/SE/16/1); Absalom Wrinkmore, father of Basell's husband Philip; William Wrinkmore held a St John's house in High Street in 1658 (SHC D/P/gla.j/5/1/108).
  • Coles. Thomas Coles of Glastonbury made William Holbrook overseer of his will in 1602/3. (The FamilySearch tree notes reject "Coles" as William's wife's maiden name for want of a source.)
  • Gutch (not known in-laws, but entangled with both families). Clement Gutch Sr.'s 1632 will remembers the Weavers; Samuel Gutch was a defendant in the widow Cecily Holbrooke's Chancery suit of 1653; John Gutch was a Glastonbury justice in the 1650s. Notes on the Gutch family of Glastonbury are in SHC DD/SAS/C795/SW/23.

In New England

  • Stream / Otis. Elizabeth Stream, Capt. John's second wife, daughter of the widow Elizabeth Stream, later John Otis's second wife.
  • Pierce. Abigail, wife of John (1650), daughter of Capt. Michael Pierce of Scituate.
  • Chittenden. Sarah, wife of John (1686). Not yet researched.
  • Mayo. Sarah, Elisha's first wife, and her sister Martha, wife of Elisha's brother Ezekiel, were daughters of Daniel Mayo Sr. of Eastham, yeoman (will 8 Nov 1754, proved 29 Jan 1755), and his wife Mary. Their siblings: Daniel (eldest son, co-executor), Samuel, Anna (m. Barnabas Young), Mary (m. Elisha Bickford) and Mercy.
  • Newcomb. Priscilla, Elisha's second wife.
  • Clark. Sarah, Gideon's first wife, daughter of James Clark Jr. of Plymouth (will 19 June 1806, proved 1815, Plymouth Probate 47:103, naming "Sarah Holbrook") and Hannah Swift.
  • Ellis / Blackmer. Nancy Ellis, Gideon's second wife and Richard B.'s mother; her first husband was Richard Blackmer, the source of the Blackmer name. Her Ellis and Freeman ancestry is in Freeman_Ellis_Line_Research.md.
  • Lowe. Harriet Phillips Lowe of Deer Isle, Maine, wife of Richard B. Sr.
  • Clifford, McMillan. See the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree.

Part Four: Holbrook groups not joined to the line

These are kept here so that their records are not mistaken for ours, and because the English ones are the pool from which William's parents may eventually come. (Sixth revision: William's parents are now placed in Part One. The north Somerset entry below is kept as the wider family.)

  • North Somerset, 1503-1631 [D, records]. Sixth revision: William was born into this family (Part One). The judgment at the end of this entry is superseded; Robert's nephew William is now taken to be a different, younger man. Roger Holbroke of Chew (will 1503) and his son Thomas; Thomas Holbroke of Norton Malreward, son-in-law of Nicholas and Alice Derell of Marksbury, with children John and Johan living in 1552; John Holbrooke m. 1556 Elen Saunders at Norton Malreward and had children baptised there 1558-1581 (Thomas, John, Johan, John, Thomas, Arthur, Alexander, Elenor, Judith, Sara, Ursula, Susane); Robert Holbroke with land in Stanton Prior, 1546; wills at Stanton Prior (1544, 1615), Dundry (1546, 1556), Chew (1552), Chew Magna (1565), Sutton Wick (1568), Keynsham (1569, 1631), Norton Malreward (1571, 1592/3), Queen Charlton (1616/17) and Chew Stoke (1627); Henry and John Holbrook, Bishop Sutton musters, 1569. A William Holbrooke had a daughter Rebecka baptised at Keynsham, 12 Jan 1594/5. Glastonbury Holbrookes held leases with land in Marksbury and Saltford, 1577-1685 (SHC DD/BR/su/6). Robert Holbrooke of Queen Charlton, yeoman (will March 1616/17, proved 3 July 1617; TNA PROB 11/130/32), probably the Robert bapt. Norton Malreward 1557/8, son of Thomas: wife Elnor (probably the Elinor of Chew Stoke, widow, 1627); son Robert; daughters Jone, Katherine and Milliard; "William Holbroke the sonne of John Holbrooke my brother deceased"; the sons John, Robert and Thomas of a John Holbroke; the sons Richard and John of a Nicholas Holbroke; James Holbrooke; overseers the vicar of Compton Dando and the minister of Queen Charlton [D]. Alice Derell of Marksbury (1551/2) calls Thomas Holbroke her son-in-law; her daughter was Agnes Saunders, and Thomas's son John married Elen Saunders in 1556 [D]. My judgment is now roughly 60-65% that William came from this family, and perhaps 40% that he was Robert's nephew William, son of John [I]. Transcriptions in Holbrooke-PCC-Wills-1503-1617.md.
  • Compton Dundon: withdrawn. The "Edith Holbrooke of Compton Dundon, widow, 1593" of the DD/X/HBS/1 index is Edith of Compton Dando, William's probable mother (Part One). Her original will (D/D/ct/1/H/135) and Medlycott's index both say Compton Dando.
  • Compton Dando, later generations [D]. Nicholas Holbrooke (son Richard bapt. 1 Nov 1606; Nicholas bur. 2 May 1639) and Joane Holbrooke (bur. 7 May 1639); Nicholas's sons Richard and John were legatees of Robert of Queen Charlton. Davis suggests Nicholas was a son of John the elder [C].
  • Compton Bishop and Cheddar [D]. John Holbrooke of Compton Bishop, will 11 Oct 1585, proved 11 Dec 1585 (TNA PROB 11/68/700): house at Cheddar; brothers Thomas and Roger Holbrooke; sister Mrs Fisher; Henry Holbrooke's wife; wife Joan; no children named. Roughly 7 to 13 miles north-west of Glastonbury.
  • Eltham, Kent, and Westminster [D, not ours]. Richard Holbroke, "yoman of the kinges most honorable pryvy chamber," will 4 Feb 1549/50 (TNA PROB 11/33/142): son Frances, mother Margery, brother Sampson, wife Thomasyn. No Somerset connection.
  • Thornbury, Gloucestershire [D]. A separate resident Holbrooke family with at least ten marriages, 1560-1636, including Thomas Holdbrooke and Constance "Tawier" (1560), whom Lord proposed as William's parents. Ruled out: William was born about 1551-2.
  • Mendon and Bellingham, Massachusetts: the route in Mollie's typescript. Thomas (c. 1624-1697) of Braintree > Peter (b. 1655) > Eliphalet (b. 27 Feb 1691/2; d. Bellingham 19 Oct 1775), whose children were born at Mendon and Bellingham 1717-1736 (Ebenezer, Seth, Eliphalet, Noah, Caleb, Elijah, among others). He stayed in Bellingham, where he deeded his homestead in 1767. Nothing places him or a son Elisha on Cape Cod [I].
  • Plymouth's other Gideon. Gideon Holbrook (b. 1 Mar 1786, Plymouth; d. 11 Nov 1868, Plymouth, mariner), son of Capt. Eliphalet and Mary (Covell), and so the elder Gideon's nephew. m. 1808 Elizabeth (Betsey) Howland; children Gideon (m. 1840 Victorine Annette Simmons; their son Gideon b. 9 May 1844, d. 10 Dec 1847), Eliphalet (1831-1886, m. Amelia Zahn), Anna E. (m. William M. Barnes) and Sarah. The War of 1812 prisoner Gideon Holbrook (b. 1787) is probably this man. The 1847 death on the FamilySearch tree, and the "fought in the War of 1812" in Cook's history of Penn's Cove, belong to this family, not to Richard B.'s father.
  • Naaman Holbrook of Plymouth. m. (1) Mary (daughter Lois d. 1786 aged 13); m. (2) 1793 Hannah (Luce), widow of Ezra Finney. Another Wellfleet Holbrook in Plymouth; relationship to Gideon unknown. Davis lists him as a son of "Eliphalet 1st."
  • Abington. Richard Holbrook (b. 10 Oct 1820, Abington; d. 1890/91, Rockland), son of Richard and Anna (Reed) Holbrook. A different Richard of the same age; his mother's Reed surname has nothing to do with the Collins-Reed line.

Part Five: Forks and discrepancies

Question Claims Present reading
William's parents Thomas and Constance "Thayer" of Thornbury (Lord 1942); unknown (FamilySearch tree); "?John the younger," son of Thomas of Norton Malreward (Davis 1945, Stone-Gregg 1987, Knoff 1989) Thomas of Norton Malreward and Edith (widow Sanders), about 85% for Thomas and 75% for Edith. William's 1617 deposition (born Norton Malreward c. 1551-2; 20 years at Compton Dando) was not known to Davis
William's birth c. 1560 (Weaver); 1562 (FamilySearch tree); c. 1565 (Stone-Gregg) c. 1551-2, Norton Malreward (aged 65 on 9 May 1617)
Overseers of William's will Clement Weaver Sr. and Thomas Tylye (Lord); Thomas Holbrooke, Clement Weaver the elder and Thomas "Eyly" (Davis) Open; read the original
Edith Holbrooke's parish Compton Dundon (index to DD/X/HBS/1); Compton Dando (her original will; Medlycott) Compton Dando
Thomas the immigrant's birthplace "Eversley in Glastonbury" (Davis, Pane-Joyce) Probably Compton Dando, where his father lived c. 1578-1598 [I]
Elisha's father (a) John and Sarah (Chittenden) of Scituate: Scituate VR, Vinton 1858, FamilySearch tree. (b) "Eliphalet son of Peter": Davis 1899, followed by Mollie's typescript (a), about 95%. John Holbrook of Scituate, gentleman, was "now of Eastham" by 1738 and died there by 1749 as "Capt. John Holbrook late of Eastham"; his sons John, Thomas and Ezekiel are also found at Eastham and Wellfleet, and Ezekiel married a sister of Elisha's wife. The only Eliphalet son of Peter lived and died in Bellingham. Davis's own Holbrook entry lists Gideon, Eliphalet and Jonathan as sons of both "Eliphalet 1st" and Elisha, so it is muddled. Point for (b): Elisha's eldest son was named Eliphalet
Elisha's first wife Sarah May(o) at the 1742 intention; "Annah Mayo" at the marriage (index); "Mary Mayhew" in Mollie Resolved: Sarah, daughter of Daniel Mayo Sr. of Eastham (his will, 1754)
Death of John (b. 1686) 28 Feb 1740/1, Scituate (FamilySearch tree) By early 1749, at Eastham (Barnstable probate, 1749)
Elisha's death FamilySearch tree: "before 7 Feb 1779" Dead before 11 June 1779, when guardians were appointed for his minor children; estate administered 1779-1780
Gideon's death FamilySearch tree and earlier notes: 1847 23 Jan 1842 (Find a Grave; will proved April 1842). The 1847 death is of a three-year-old in the other Gideon family
Gideon's birth year 1766 (Mollie), before 1767 (FamilySearch); Find a Grave shows 1786 (aged 55-56) c. 1765: his stone reads "Æ. 76 Y'rs." Find a Grave misread 76 as 56
Richard B. Sr.'s birth 7 Aug 1821 (FamilySearch tree; 1894 necrology; census ages); 1830 (Collins-Reed Master Tree; Sunnyside memorial marker) 7 Aug 1821
Richard B. Sr.'s death 14 May 1894 (FamilySearch tree); 1898 (Sunnyside memorial marker, a later stone; Collins-Reed tree; family book) May 1894: Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 18 Nov 1894, pioneers who died in the year. The Collins-Reed tree, the family book and Find a Grave need correcting
Richard B. Sr.'s arrival in California 1850 (family account) 4 Mar 1851 (1894 necrology); he was at home in Plymouth on 27 Aug 1850
Richard B. Jr.'s birth 16 Sep 1872 (Collins-Reed tree); 16 Sep 1873 (FamilySearch) 1872: aged 7 in the 1880 census; "born... September, 1872" in the Pioneers of Alaska notice, 1917
Richard B. Sr.'s children FamilySearch tree adds Nancy (c. 1871) and Mary (c. 1872) and omits Josephine Josephine (1865-1870) is buried at Sunnyside; Nancy and Mary are unsourced and probably belong to another family
Capt. John's baptism 6 Apr 1618 (Weaver, from the register); 10 Apr 1618 (FamilySearch index) Open; read the image
Capt. John's daughter who m. Joseph Nash Elizabeth (Weaver; Davis 1945); Grace (Vinton) Probably Elizabeth (two of three sources); open until a record is seen
Joan's first marriage 8 May 1605 (index); 3 June 1605 (Weaver, Lord) Open
William the younger's daughter Mary bapt. 28 Jan 1629/30 (Weaver); "29 June 1629/30" (Lord) Weaver; Lord's date is impossible as written
Sally Clark Holbrook's age at death "aged 33" (1899 transcription of her stone); b. 1765 (Radasch) 53; a misread digit

  3. **Last revised:** 1 October 2026 (sixth revision that day: William's 1617 deposition, which gives his birthplace as Norton Malreward, and the abstracted wills of Thomas Holbrooke of Norton Malreward (1571/2) and his widow Edith of Compton Dando (1592), which add a generation (Part One); fifth revision: the PCC wills of the north Somerset Holbrookes (Part Four); fourth revision: Richard B. Built from the third and fourth research passes recorded in `early-holbrook-family-england.md` (English side) and from the New England records checked on 1 October 2026 (Part Two).

  13. **The line at a glance**
  14. Thomas Holbrooke of Norton Malreward (d. 1571/2) > William Holbrooke of Glastonbury (c. 1551-1625/6) > Thomas, the immigrant (d. Weymouth, by 1677) > Capt. John (1618-1699) > John (1650-1731) > Capt. John (1686-by 1749) > Deacon Elisha (1716-1779) > Capt. Gideon (c. 1765-1842) > Capt. Richard Blackmer Sr. (1821-1894) > Capt. Richard Blackmer Jr. (1872-after 1919) > Richard Clifford (1902-1955) > Frances Fairchild (b. 1931)
  15. **Strength of each step**
  16. | Step | Tier | What supports it |
  17. |---|---|---|
  18. | Thomas of Norton Malreward > William | [I], about 85% | William's deposition of 9 May 1617 (abstract in Spear, vol. Davis (1945), without the deposition, had made William a grandson through John the younger, with a question mark |
  19. | William > Thomas | [D] | William's will (1625) names son Thomas and grandson Thomas Jr.; Thomas's marriage (1616) and his sons' baptisms (1618, 1620) are in the St John's register |
  20. | Thomas > Capt. John | [D] | Baptised at St John's 1618 as son of Thomas; on the 1635 passenger list with his parents; Thomas's will (1668) names "eldest son John" as executor |
  21. | Capt. John > John (1650) | [D] | Capt. John's will (1699) names his son John "who has a wife Abigail" |
  22. | John (1650) > John (1686) | [D] | Scituate VR: "John, s. John, Nov. 19, 1686"; the 1699 will names a grandson John among son John's children |
  23. | John (1686) > Elisha | [D] birth, [I] identity, about 95% | Scituate VR: "Elisha, s. Jo[h]n Jr. and Sarah, May 25, 1716." The father moved to Eastham: "John Holbrook of Scituate... now of Eastham," gentleman (court records, 1736-1738), and "Capt. The rival claim, that Elisha was a son of Eliphalet son of Peter, is set out in Part Five |
  24. | Elisha > Gideon | [C] plus [I], about 80-85% | Davis (1899) and Radasch (1973) both call Gideon a son of Elisha. No record yet found that names his father |
  25. | Gideon > Richard B. Sr. | [D] | Gideon's will (1841, proved 1842) names son Richard B. Holbrook; Richard's 1855 deed calls Gideon "my late father" and Elisha "my brother"; Richard was in his widowed mother Nancy's household in 1850 |
  26. | Richard B. Sr. > Richard B. Jr. | [D] | 1880 census, Island County: a son aged 7 in the household of R. B. and Harriet Holbrook; Mollie's 1898 marriage record names her parents as Richard B. and Harriet P. (Lowe) Holbrook |
  27. | Richard B. Jr. and below | per the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree and family records | |

  29. ## Part One: Norton Malreward, Compton Dando and Glastonbury, Somerset
  30. - **Thomas Holbrooke "the elder" of Norton Malreward** (c. 1500 - 1571/2)
  31. - b. c. 1500 (Davis's estimate) [C], parents unknown; bur. 11 Mar 1571/2, Norton Malreward ("Thomas Holbroke the elder," Spear's transcript; "Thomas Holbrok Senior," FamilySearch index) [D]
  33. - Note: Davis (1945, pp.
  34. - John "the elder" (c. 1530s? - ?): child in the Derell wills; m. 28 Nov 1556, Norton Malreward, Elen Saunders (probably the "Elenor wife of John Holbrooke" bur. there 28 July 1558); children baptised at Norton Malreward 1558-1581 (Thomas, John, Johan, John, Thomas, Arthur, Alexander or Ales, Elenor, Judith, Sara, Ursula, Susane); possibly the John Holbrooke bur. Norton Malreward 30 June 1608 [D baptisms; I identity]
  35. - Johan (? - ?): child in the Derell wills, 1546-1552 [D]
  36. - Thomas (? - ?): £5, a colt and the Compton Dando fee farm, 1571/2; a "John, son of Thomas," bapt. Norton Malreward 23 June 1563, may be his [D will; I baptism]
  37. - **William Holbrooke** (c. 1551-2 - 1625/6): continues below
  38. - John "the younger" (? - ?): £5 and remainders to the Compton Dando holdings, 1571/2; probably the son John who was Edith's residuary legatee and executor, 1592 [D]
  39. - Margery (bapt. 1 Sept 1555, Norton Malreward - ?): £10, 1571/2 [D]
  40. - Robert (bapt.
  41. - Stepsons: Richard Sanders (Sandes) and Thomas Sandes, Edith's sons by her first husband [D]
  42. - **Link to William:** [I], about 85%. See the table above and `early-holbrook-family-england.md`, section 5A.
  43. - **William Holbrooke "the elder"** (c. 1551-2 - 1625/6)
  45. - m. probably Edith (bur. 11 June 1612, St John's, Glastonbury) [I]; maiden name unknown. The "Edith Saunders" of online trees is probably a mix-up with his mother [I]
  46. - Note: Yeoman.
  47. - **Link:** [I], about 85%, son of Thomas of Norton Malreward and probably (about 75%) of Edith.
  48. - Children born before about 1598 were probably born at Compton Dando, where no register or bishop's transcript survives before 1602/3 [I].
  49. - Joan (c. 1587 - ?): m. (1) St John's, 8 May 1605 [index; Weaver and Lord give 3 June 1605], Nicholas Bennett alias Illary (bur. 20 Mar 1605/6), son Nicholas Bennett bapt. 22 Mar 1605/6; m. (2) 14 Jan 1609/10 Randall Gylles (bur. 29 Oct 1656), daughter Alice Gylles bapt. 23 June 1611 [D marriages and baptisms; C that she was William's daughter]
  50. - Elizabeth (c. 1590 - ?): m. 12 Sep 1611, St John's (the index also has the marriage under 1610), Thomas Tylye, overseer of the will; children William bapt. 7 Dec 1614, Edmund bapt. 8 July 1617, Mary bapt. 23 Apr 1620 [D; Edmund is the grandson "Edmund Tyly" of the will]
  51. - **Thomas Holbrook** (c. 1589-94 - by 1677): continues in Part Two
  52. - John (c. 1595 - ?): left to inherit the "grounds att yee moore geate" if living; Weaver: he "seems to have left home before his father made his will"; Lord places him in Weymouth by 1627 [C]
  53. - Rebecca (c.
  54. - William the younger (c. 1600 - ?): executor and residuary legatee, 1625; daughter Mary bapt. 28 Jan 1629/30 (Weaver 1928; Lord prints "29 June 1629/30") [D]
  55. - Basell (Basil) (? - ?): m. 26 or 27 Jan 1625/6, St John's, Philip Wrinkmore (bapt. Jan 1605/6, son of Absalom Wrinkmore); children Rebecca bapt. 17 Oct 1626 (Weaver; the index has 1627), William bapt. Oct 1636, Anne bapt. 1640 [D]
  56. - "Julia, daughter of William," bapt. 25 Mar 1603 (FamilySearch index): Davis (1945) reads the same entry as the baptism of Basell ("Bazell (a daughter)"), so it is very probably Basell's baptism misread [D]
  57. - Possible kinswoman: Anna or Agnes Holbrook, m.
  58. - Other Glastonbury Holbrookes, relationship unknown: John Holbroke, tenant of a St John's church cottage, 1574 (the earliest Holbrooke found in Glastonbury); John Holbrook, bur. 19 Aug 1609; Cecily (or Sybil) Holbrooke, widow, in Chancery over property in Glastonbury and Backwell, 1647-1654, against Samuel Gutch and others [D]

  62. - b. Weaver gives 1675
  63. - m. 12 Sep 1616, St John's, Glastonbury, Jane Powyes (Powys), living 1673

  100. - b. 19 Nov 1686, Scituate (VR); d. by early 1749, Eastham, intestate: letters of administration on the estate of "Capt John Holbrook late of Eastham in the County aforesaid Gent Deceased" were granted to "John Holbrook of Eastham... Seafaring man" (Barnstable Probate, 1749). The FamilySearch tree's death of 28 Feb 1740/1 at Scituate is not supported by anything found
  101. - m. 3 May 1709, Scituate, Sarah Chittenden (b. 1688 per the FamilySearch tree; parents not yet researched)
  102. - Note: The "John Holbrook of Scituate in the County of Plimouth, Gent." of Suffolk court cases of 1734-1737 (his son John, b. 1710, is the only other candidate, and was young to be styled gentleman); "John Holbrook of Hingham... otherwise called John Holbrook of Scituate" (Bristol County, 1736); "John Holbrook of Hingham in the County of Suffolk now of Eastham in the County of Barnstable, Gent." (Suffolk, 1738); "John Holbrook of Eastham... Gentleman" in suits of 1739-1745, one against the widow Hannah Turner of Scituate, administratrix of Josiah Turner (Hannah was probably his sister). Vinton: of their ten children, John the eldest went to Maine and "most of the others settled at Eastham and Wellfleet."
  103. - **Link:** [D] Scituate VR birth; grandfather's will, 1699.
  104. - John, b. 13 June 1710: probably "John Holbrook Junr of Eastham," miller or mariner, in court 1739-1742; bought a dwelling house on Great Chebeague Island, North Yarmouth, Maine, from William Robords, 18 Oct 1742 (York County deeds), which fits Vinton's "removed to Maine"; administrator of his father's estate, 1749
  105. - Thomas, b.
  106. - **Elisha Holbrook** (1716 - 1779): next entry
  107. - Abiezer, b. 16 Sep 1719
  108. - Martha, b. 11 Nov 1721
  109. - Abigail, b. 7 Apr 1724
  110. - Ezekiel, b. 29 May 1727; the Ezekiel Holbrook of Wellfleet who m. Martha Mayo, sister of Elisha's wife (her father's will, 1754); Martha d. 7 June 1775; he is probably the Ezekiel Holbrook Sr. buried at Wellfleet, d. 5 Sep 1799
  111. - Luce, b. 15 Jan 1729
  112. - **Deacon Elisha Holbrook** (1716 - 1779)
  113. - b. 25 May 1716, Scituate (VR: "s. Jo[h]n Jr. and Sarah"); d. before 11 June 1779, Wellfleet, intestate
  115. - Note: His estate (Barnstable Probate, 1779-1780) was administered by his widow Priscilla; the creditors' accounts of 25-26 Nov 1779 call him "Deacon Elisha Holbrook late of Wellfleet," and Priscilla complained that his son Eliphalet was holding five bushels of salt and other goods of the estate.
  116. - **Link:** [D] Scituate birth; [I] that the Eastham man is the Scituate-born Elisha (see the table at the top and Part Five).
  117. - By his first wife (FamilySearch tree; Davis names Gideon, Eliphalet and Jonathan):
  118. - Capt. Eliphalet (c. 1745 - 1815): of Wellfleet, then Plymouth by 1790; m. 31 Oct 1771, Wellfleet, Mary Covell (c. 1751 - 20 Sep 1842); shipowner; d. 7 Feb 1815, Plymouth, aged 70 (Burial Hill); father of the other Plymouth Gideon (Part Four)
  119. - Elisha (c. 1748 - ?)
  120. - David (30 May 1750 - 1831): d. Eastham
  121. - Jonathan (bef. 1755 - aft. 1800): m. Mercy; children b. Wellfleet 1783-1788
  122. - **Gideon Holbrook** (c. 1765 - 1842): next entry
  123. - Mary (bef. 1767 - ?)
  124. - By Priscilla (the 1779 guardianships): Daniel (c. 1772 - 1863, Plymouth, Maine), Sarah (c. 1773 - bef. 1795), Joseph (1774 - 1843), Ezekiel (1776 - 1863, Boothbay, Maine), Jeremiah (c. 1778-79)
  125. - **Capt. Gideon Holbrook** (c. 1765 - 1842)
  126. - b. c. 1765, Wellfleet (the place from his daughter Mary's 1899 death record; no birth record found); d. 23 Jan 1842, Plymouth; bur. Manomet Cemetery, plot 9D. His stone reads "GIDEON HOLBROOK / Died / Jan. 23, 1842 / Æ. 76 Y'rs." (Æ. stands for *aetatis*, "aged"), which puts his birth between Jan 1765 and Jan 1766. Find a Grave (40957263) shows "1786 (aged 55-56)," a misreading of the 76 that matches his nephew's birth year; the photograph taken in raking light shows 76 clearly
  127. - m. (1) int. 29 Dec 1787, m. 3 Apr 1788 (as indexed), Plymouth, Sarah "Sally" Clark (b. 13 Feb 1765, Plymouth, daughter of James Clark Jr. and Hannah Swift; d. 1 Mar 1818; her stone at Manomet is transcribed "aged 33," almost certainly 53); (2) int. 29 Nov 1818, m. Dec 1818, Plymouth, "Mrs. Nancy Blackman" or Blackmer, born Nancy Ellis (b. 21 Oct 1781, Plymouth, daughter of George Ellis and Phebe Stevens; widow of Richard Blackmer; d. 29 Jan 1864, Plymouth, a widow, aged 82y 3m 8d; bur. Manomet)
  128. - Note: Plymouth mariner and shipmaster: master of the schooner *Eagle* in 1790 and 1791 and of the brigantine *William* in 1794; co-owner with Eliphalet Holbrook and Jesse Harlow of a Plymouth schooner in 1803-1804. He and Eliphalet, "both of Plymouth... Mariner[s]," sold "our Dwelling house" at Monument Ponds, which they had bought together from Capt. Samuel Hovey, to Caleb Bartlett on 20 Nov 1795. (A Gideon who was master and co-owner of the *Endeavour* with Eliphalet in 1809 could be this Gideon or his nephew.) "Capt." on the gravestones of his wife Sally and daughter Mary; "gentleman" at probate. Hamilton Hurd, *History of Plymouth County*, 1884); whether this Gideon or his nephew is not settled.

  130. - By Sarah Clark: Lois (1788), m. 1810 Isaac Tribble; Sally (1791); Martha "Patty" (1793), m. Jacob Covington; Betsey (1795), m. Ichabod Morton; Hannah (1797); Harriet (1799 - bef. 1841), m. 1821 Robert Davie; Mary "Polly" (c. Oct 1801 - 13 Jan 1819, aged 17y 3m). Sally and Hannah are not in the 1841 will.
  131. - By Nancy Ellis:
  132. - Gideon (c. 1819 - 30 Nov 1852): "Holbrook G., 2d, Monument Ponds, seaman" (Plymouth directory, 1846); m. 27 July 1846, Plymouth, Lucretia W. Bartlett (daughter of Lemuel and Lucy); in 1850 living at Plymouth with Lucretia, their son Gideon H. and Lucretia's mother Lucy Bartlett. Died at Plymouth, 30 Nov 1852, aged 33, of **"Chagres fever"** (state copy of the Plymouth death return, 1852, no. 19 Sep 1853, of **dysentery**, aged 3y 11m by the register, parents "Gideon Holbrook"; 1853 return, no.
  133. - **Richard Blackmer Holbrook** (1821 - 1894): next entry
  134. - Elisha (c. 1824
  135. - Mary "Polly" (9 Mar 1826 - 5 Jan 1899): unmarried; lived with her brother Eliphalet at Manomet; her death record names her father Gideon Holbrook, born Wellfleet, and mother Nancy Ellis
  136. - Eliphalet (19 Oct 1828 - 25 Mar 1920): m. 11 Oct 1854, Worcester, Harriet Rice (1829-1902); of Manomet; children M. Elizabeth (1855-1946), Hattie Maria (1857-1863), George Eliphalet (1859-1866), Etta May (1865-1924) and Florence (1871-1944); buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Plymouth (Find a Grave 103737789)
  137. - **Capt. Richard Blackmer Holbrook Sr.** (1821 - 1894)
  138. - b. 7 Aug 1821, Plymouth (Manomet) [D]; d. May 1894, Coupeville, Island County, Washington [D]; bur. Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville, lot 59. Source for both dates: the annual list of Washington pioneers who had died in the past year, from the report of Secretary Prosch to the pioneers' reunion at Tacoma, printed in *The Seattle Post-Intelligencer*, 18 Nov 1894, p.
  139. - m. 24 Dec 1860, Steilacoom, Washington Territory, Harriet Phillips Lowe (b. 12 June 1834, Deer Isle, Maine; d. 26 Nov 1918, Seattle)
  140. - Note: In his widowed mother's household at Plymouth in the census taken there on 27 Aug 1850: "Richard Holbrook, 27, Seaman," real estate $200, beside his brother Elisha, 25, machinist [D].
  141. - The "1830-1898" on the memorial marker at Sunnyside ("In memoriam / Holbrook / Captain Richard B.
  142. - **Link:** [D] his father's will, 1841; his 1855 deed; the 1850 census.
  143. - Horace Greeley (1863 - 1939): b. 1 June 1863 (death record) or 3 Jan 1863 (FamilySearch tree), Coveland; m. 21 Dec 1896, Island County, Ada M. James (1877-1935); d. 4 July 1939, Coupeville, carpenter and engineer
  144. - Josephine (1865 - Aug 1870): buried Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville (Find a Grave index) [C]
  145. - Mollie Frances (1870 - 1954): b. 4 Dec 1870, Coveland; m. 15 June 1898, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Emil Charles Pfeiffer (her residence given as Coupeville, Wash.; parents Richard B. and Harriet P. Lowe) [D]; compiler of the family typescript; d. 24 Feb 1954, Mount Vernon, Washington
  146. - Nancy (c. 1871) and Mary (c. 1872): in the FamilySearch tree with no sources. Probably not his children: the 1880 census lists only Horace, Mollie and Richard, and there is no room for two births between Mollie (Dec 1870) and Richard Jr. (Sept 1872) [?]
  147. - **Richard Blackmer Holbrook Jr.** (1872 - after 1919): next entry
  148. - **Capt. Richard Blackmer Holbrook Jr.** (1872 - after 1919)
  150. - m. 28 Sep 1900, Seattle, Jessie Lorene Clifford (1876 - 1948)
  151. - Note: Steamboat master on Puget Sound. The FamilySearch tree attaches a 1923 death at Bismarck, North Dakota, which belongs to another Richard Holbrook. Full entry in the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree.
  152. - **Richard Clifford Holbrook** (1902 - 1955), m. May 1927 Lucille M. McMillan
  153. - **Frances Fairchild Holbrook** (b. 1931)

  155. ## Part Three: Families who married in
  156. **At Glastonbury**
  157. - **Powyes.** Jane, wife of Thomas. Pane-Joyce gives her parents as William Powyes (b. c. 1568) and Elizabeth [C]. The Glastonbury index has only the 1616 marriage.
  158. - **Weaver.** Thomas Weaver, of Glastonbury from at least 1590 to 1632, father of Clement; probably the husband of the Margaret Weaver who was a legatee of Nicholas Adams of St Benedict's, butcher (1586), and executrix of his widow Margaret (1588/9) [C, Weaver 1928].
  159. - **Tylye.** Thomas Tylye, son-in-law and overseer, 1625. Lord says that in 1379 a William Holbrook made William Tylye "of Glastonbury Abbey" his heir [C, source not identified]. A Thomas and Edith Tylye held land at Brewham in 1368 (SHC DD/WHh/593) [D, context only].
  160. - **Bennett alias Illary, and Gylles.** Joan's two husbands (Part One).
  161. - **Notley.** John Notley, husband of Anna or Agnes Holbrook (Part One).
  162. - **Wrinkmore.** Henry Wrinkmore of Glastonbury, yeoman, took a lease of Godney Drove in 1593 (SHC DD/SE/16/1); Absalom Wrinkmore, father of Basell's husband Philip; William Wrinkmore held a St John's house in High Street in 1658 (SHC D/P/gla.j/5/1/108).
  163. - **Coles.** Thomas Coles of Glastonbury made William Holbrook overseer of his will in 1602/3. (The FamilySearch tree notes reject "Coles" as William's wife's maiden name for want of a source.)
  164. - **Gutch** (not known in-laws, but entangled with both families).
  165. **In New England**
  166. - **Stream / Otis.** Elizabeth Stream, Capt. John's second wife, daughter of the widow Elizabeth Stream, later John Otis's second wife.
  167. - **Pierce.** Abigail, wife of John (1650), daughter of Capt. Michael Pierce of Scituate.
  168. - **Chittenden.** Sarah, wife of John (1686). Not yet researched.
  169. - **Mayo.** Sarah, Elisha's first wife, and her sister Martha, wife of Elisha's brother Ezekiel, were daughters of Daniel Mayo Sr. of Eastham, yeoman (will 8 Nov 1754, proved 29 Jan 1755), and his wife Mary. Their siblings: Daniel (eldest son, co-executor), Samuel, Anna (m. Barnabas Young), Mary (m. Elisha Bickford) and Mercy.
  170. - **Newcomb.** Priscilla, Elisha's second wife.
  171. - **Clark.** Sarah, Gideon's first wife, daughter of James Clark Jr. of Plymouth (will 19 June 1806, proved 1815, Plymouth Probate 47:103, naming "Sarah Holbrook") and Hannah Swift.
  172. - **Ellis / Blackmer.** Nancy Ellis, Gideon's second wife and Richard B.'s mother; her first husband was Richard Blackmer, the source of the Blackmer name. Her Ellis and Freeman ancestry is in `Freeman_Ellis_Line_Research.md`.
  173. - **Lowe.** Harriet Phillips Lowe of Deer Isle, Maine, wife of Richard B. Sr.
  174. - **Clifford, McMillan.** See the Collins-Reed Master Family Tree.

  176. ## Part Four: Holbrook groups not joined to the line
  177. These are kept here so that their records are not mistaken for ours, and because the English ones are the pool from which William's parents may eventually come. (Sixth revision: William's parents are now placed in Part One. The north Somerset entry below is kept as the wider family.)
  178. - **North Somerset, 1503-1631** [D, records]. *Sixth revision: William was born into this family (Part One). The judgment at the end of this entry is superseded; Robert's nephew William is now taken to be a different, younger man.* Roger Holbroke of Chew (will 1503) and his son Thomas; Thomas Holbroke of Norton Malreward, son-in-law of Nicholas and Alice Derell of Marksbury, with children John and Johan living in 1552; John Holbrooke m. 1556 Elen Saunders at Norton Malreward and had children baptised there 1558-1581 (Thomas, John, Johan, John, Thomas, Arthur, Alexander, Elenor, Judith, Sara, Ursula, Susane); Robert Holbroke with land in Stanton Prior, 1546; wills at Stanton Prior (1544, 1615), Dundry (1546, 1556), Chew (1552), Chew Magna (1565), Sutton Wick (1568), Keynsham (1569, 1631), Norton Malreward (1571, 1592/3), Queen Charlton (1616/17) and Chew Stoke (1627); Henry and John Holbrook, Bishop Sutton musters, 1569. A William Holbrooke had a daughter Rebecka baptised at Keynsham, 12 Jan 1594/5. Glastonbury Holbrookes held leases with land in Marksbury and Saltford, 1577-1685 (SHC DD/BR/su/6). **Robert Holbrooke of Queen Charlton, yeoman** (will March 1616/17, proved 3 July 1617; TNA PROB 11/130/32), probably the Robert bapt. Transcriptions in `Holbrooke-PCC-Wills-1503-1617.md`.
  179. - **Compton Dundon: withdrawn.** The "Edith Holbrooke of Compton Dundon, widow, 1593" of the DD/X/HBS/1 index is Edith of Compton Dando, William's probable mother (Part One). Her original will (D/D/ct/1/H/135) and Medlycott's index both say Compton Dando.
  180. - **Compton Dando, later generations** [D].
  181. - **Compton Bishop and Cheddar** [D]. John Holbrooke of Compton Bishop, will 11 Oct 1585, proved 11 Dec 1585 (TNA PROB 11/68/700): house at Cheddar; brothers Thomas and Roger Holbrooke; sister Mrs Fisher; Henry Holbrooke's wife; wife Joan; no children named. Roughly 7 to 13 miles north-west of Glastonbury.
  182. - **Eltham, Kent, and Westminster** [D, not ours]. Richard Holbroke, "yoman of the kinges most honorable pryvy chamber," will 4 Feb 1549/50 (TNA PROB 11/33/142): son Frances, mother Margery, brother Sampson, wife Thomasyn. No Somerset connection.
  183. - **Thornbury, Gloucestershire** [D]. A separate resident Holbrooke family with at least ten marriages, 1560-1636, including Thomas Holdbrooke and Constance "Tawier" (1560), whom Lord proposed as William's parents. Ruled out: William was born about 1551-2.
  184. - **Mendon and Bellingham, Massachusetts: the route in Mollie's typescript.** Thomas (c.
  185. - **Plymouth's other Gideon.** Gideon Holbrook (b.
  186. - **Naaman Holbrook of Plymouth.** m.
  187. - **Abington.** Richard Holbrook (b. 10 Oct 1820, Abington; d. 1890/91, Rockland), son of Richard and Anna (Reed) Holbrook. A different Richard of the same age; his mother's Reed surname has nothing to do with the Collins-Reed line.

  189. ## Part Five: Forks and discrepancies
  190. | Question | Claims | Present reading |
  191. |---|---|---|
  192. | William's parents | Thomas and Constance "Thayer" of Thornbury (Lord 1942); unknown (FamilySearch tree); "?John the younger," son of Thomas of Norton Malreward (Davis 1945, Stone-Gregg 1987, Knoff 1989) | **Thomas of Norton Malreward and Edith (widow Sanders)**, about 85% for Thomas and 75% for Edith. William's 1617 deposition (born Norton Malreward c. 1551-2; 20 years at Compton Dando) was not known to Davis |
  193. | William's birth | c. 1560 (Weaver); 1562 (FamilySearch tree); c. 1565 (Stone-Gregg) | **c. 1551-2, Norton Malreward** (aged 65 on 9 May 1617) |
  194. | Overseers of William's will | Clement Weaver Sr. and Thomas Tylye (Lord); Thomas Holbrooke, Clement Weaver the elder and Thomas "Eyly" (Davis) | Open; read the original |
  195. | Edith Holbrooke's parish | Compton Dundon (index to DD/X/HBS/1); Compton Dando (her original will; Medlycott) | **Compton Dando** |
  196. | Thomas the immigrant's birthplace | "Eversley in Glastonbury" (Davis, Pane-Joyce) | Probably Compton Dando, where his father lived c. 1578-1598 [I] |
  197. | Elisha's father | (a) John and Sarah (Chittenden) of Scituate: Scituate VR, Vinton 1858, FamilySearch tree. (b) "Eliphalet son of Peter": Davis 1899, followed by Mollie's typescript | (a), about 95%. Point for (b): Elisha's eldest son was named Eliphalet |
  198. | Elisha's first wife | Sarah May(o) at the 1742 intention; "Annah Mayo" at the marriage (index); "Mary Mayhew" in Mollie | **Resolved: Sarah**, daughter of Daniel Mayo Sr. of Eastham (his will, 1754) |
  199. | Death of John (b. 1686) | 28 Feb 1740/1, Scituate (FamilySearch tree) | By early 1749, at Eastham (Barnstable probate, 1749) |
  200. | Elisha's death | FamilySearch tree: "before 7 Feb 1779" | Dead before 11 June 1779, when guardians were appointed for his minor children; estate administered 1779-1780 |
  201. | Gideon's death | FamilySearch tree and earlier notes: 1847 | 23 Jan 1842 (Find a Grave; will proved April 1842). The 1847 death is of a three-year-old in the other Gideon family |
  202. | Gideon's birth year | 1766 (Mollie), before 1767 (FamilySearch); Find a Grave shows 1786 (aged 55-56) | **c. 1765**: his stone reads "Æ. 76 Y'rs." Find a Grave misread 76 as 56 |
  203. | Richard B. Sr.'s birth | 7 Aug 1821 (FamilySearch tree; 1894 necrology; census ages); 1830 (Collins-Reed Master Tree; Sunnyside memorial marker) | **7 Aug 1821** |
  204. | Richard B. Sr.'s death | 14 May 1894 (FamilySearch tree); 1898 (Sunnyside memorial marker, a later stone; Collins-Reed tree; family book) | **May 1894**: *Seattle Post-Intelligencer*, 18 Nov 1894, pioneers who died in the year. The Collins-Reed tree, the family book and Find a Grave need correcting |
  205. | Richard B. Sr.'s arrival in California | 1850 (family account) | **4 Mar 1851** (1894 necrology); he was at home in Plymouth on 27 Aug 1850 |
  206. | Richard B. Jr.'s birth | 16 Sep 1872 (Collins-Reed tree); 16 Sep 1873 (FamilySearch) | **1872**: aged 7 in the 1880 census; "born... September, 1872" in the Pioneers of Alaska notice, 1917 |
  207. | Richard B. Sr.'s children | FamilySearch tree adds Nancy (c. 1871) and Mary (c. 1872) and omits Josephine | Josephine (1865-1870) is buried at Sunnyside; Nancy and Mary are unsourced and probably belong to another family |
  208. | Capt. John's baptism | 6 Apr 1618 (Weaver, from the register); 10 Apr 1618 (FamilySearch index) | Open; read the image |
  209. | Capt. John's daughter who m. Joseph Nash | Elizabeth (Weaver; Davis 1945); Grace (Vinton) | Probably Elizabeth (two of three sources); open until a record is seen |
  210. | Joan's first marriage | 8 May 1605 (index); 3 June 1605 (Weaver, Lord) | Open |
  211. | William the younger's daughter | Mary bapt. 28 Jan 1629/30 (Weaver); "29 June 1629/30" (Lord) | Weaver; Lord's date is impossible as written |
  212. | Sally Clark Holbrook's age at death | "aged 33" (1899 transcription of her stone); b. 1765 (Radasch) | 53; a misread digit |
