Thomas came over as a boy in 1635 with his father, the immigrant Thomas Holbrook, and settled at Braintree. His children by his wife Joanna were Thomas; John, b. 15 Oct 1653; Peter, 7 Aug 1655; Joanna, 30 Oct 1656; Joseph, 10 Apr 1660; Mary (Coleborne); and Susanna, who married Andrew Willet of Boston in 1694 (Savage 2:443). In 1674, "Vppon the request of Thomas Holbrooke, Captaine Wm Torrey is permitted & impowred to marry the sajd Holbrooks daughter vnto Vryah Clarke" (Mass. Bay Records 5:17).
King Philip's War. His eldest son Thomas, who "m. 1666, Deborah Damon, d. of John of Scituate, and sec. w. Mary, d. of Thomas White of Braintree" (Savage 2:443), very probably went to the war. A "Tho: Holbrook" stands among the Braintree men of Capt. Isaac Johnson's company, in the list "made at Dedham December 10th, 1675" (Soldiers in King Philip's War, p. 162). The company marched with the army to the Narragansett fort, where on 19 Dec 1675 "the brave captain was among the first to fall while gallantly leading his men across the fallen tree-trunks at the entrance" (p. 161). "Thomas Holbrook" was credited £2 8s among the Braintree men on 24 Oct 1676 (p. 447), and in 1733 "Thomas Holbrook, alive" was among the Braintree grantees of Narragansett Township No. 5 (p. 433).
His will of 25 July 1695 names a wife Jane and a son-in-law Uriah Clark, and leaves his son Peter the Mendon lands bought from his brother William. He died in July 1697. Mollie's typescript traces the family down through Peter, but Peter's son Eliphalet lived and died at Bellingham, and Deacon Elisha Holbrook of Wellfleet came of another branch.
Open questions
- Which Thomas served in Johnson's company: Savage has the son dying in December 1728, before the "alive" of 1733. The claimants' proofs for Narragansett No. 5 (Bedford, N.H.) and the son's probate may say.
