Notes

First wife of Deacon Elisha Holbrook. Her father’s will (8 Nov 1754, proved 29 Jan 1755) leaves shares to “my Daughters viz Sarah the wife of Elisha Holbrook, Martha the wife of Ezekiel Holbrook, Anna the Wife of Barnabas Young, Mary the wife of Elisha Bigford.” Two Holbrook brothers married two Mayo sisters: her sister Martha married Elisha’s brother Ezekiel.

Mollie’s typescript (pp. 18-33a) gives Elisha’s wife as “Mary Mayhew, b. 22 Apr 1742, dau. of Thomas Mayhew and Mary Witherell,” with Mayhew, Skiff, Newcomb and Bayes lines. That Mary Mayhew was a real Plymouth girl (MD 19:90), born the year Elisha married. She was not his wife.

She was living in 1760, when the division of her mother’s estate named “Sarah Holbrook,” and died before November 1771, when Elisha remarried. No stone for her or for Elisha survives in the Duck Creek cemetery at Wellfleet, though her sister Martha (Mayo) Holbrook’s does: “died 7 June, 1775, aged 48 years, 5 months” (MD 11:227-229).

The Eastham marriage record itself, as Bowman printed it, reads “Elisha holebrook and Annah Mayo” (MD 20:156); the intention of 1 Apr 1742 has “Sarah May.” Her sister Anna was baptized in June 1729 and so was about 13 in May 1742, so the bride must have been Sarah, and “Annah” is an error in the record or in Bowman’s reading.

Elisha married Mary Mayhew, born 1742

His wife was Sarah Mayo, daughter of Daniel Mayo of Eastham. Their intention of 1 Apr 1742 names "Sarah May", and Daniel's will (1754) names "Sarah the wife of Elisha Holbrook"; her sister Martha married Elisha's brother Ezekiel. Elisha's eldest son Eliphalet was born about 1745, when a Mary Mayhew born in 1742 would have been three.

The Mayhews of Dinton and Martha's Vineyard are ancestors

Not ancestral. The line hangs on Elisha's wife being Mary Mayhew; she was Sarah Mayo of Eastham. The Mayhews drop out, with the Skiff, Bayes and Newcomb lines that come through them. Sarah, very probably Gideon's mother, brings Mayo, Howes, Prence, Mulford and Bassett instead. The Vineyard Mayhews themselves are real and well recorded.

    Mary Mayhew (b. 22 Apr 1742, d. 1812) married Elisha Holbrook

Her dates belong to a real Plymouth girl: "Mary Mayhew, Born April 22nd 1742. Deceasd Feb 9th 1812", daughter of Thomas Mayhew and his wife Mary (Wethrell) (Plymouth records, MD 19:90). Nothing shows she married a Holbrook. Elisha married Sarah Mayo at Eastham on 13 May 1742, three weeks after this Mary was born.

Rev. William Wetherell of Scituate is an ancestor

Not ancestral. The line reaches the family only through Mary Mayhew, daughter of Mary Wetherell, and Elisha Holbrook's wife was Sarah Mayo, not Mary Mayhew. A pencilled note at the head of this page already doubts the line.

The Skiffs, Bayeses and Newcombs are ancestors through the Mayhews

Not ancestral. These lines (pp. 30A-34A) come in through Mollie's "Mary Mayhew", wife of Elisha Holbrook. Elisha's wife was Sarah Mayo of Eastham, named as "Sarah the wife of Elisha Holbrook" in her father's will (1754), and probably Gideon's mother. So the Skiffs, Bayeses and Newcombs, like the Mayhews, are unrelated.

Mollie descended from Edward Doty and Thomas Mayhew

Neither man is an ancestor. The Doty link fails at Eleazer Churchill, whose wife was not Edward Doty's daughter, and the Mayhew link at Elisha Holbrook, whose wife, Gideon's mother, was Sarah Mayo, not Mary Mayhew.
