Sarah Howes

Also Sarah Mayo

Daughter of Jeremiah Howes, named as Sarah Mayo among the eight daughters in his will of 1708, and probably of his wife Sarah Prence, daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence. She probably married Daniel Mayo of Eastham about 1684-1688, and their children probably included a son Daniel.

Notes

Her father’s will (14 Aug 1708) names her among “my Eight Daughters Elizabeth Bacon Sarah Mayo Mary Howes Bethiah Howes Marcey Sturges Susanah Bassett Thankfull Miller and Rebekah Howes,” six score pounds of movable estate, and leaves his “Land and meadow Lyeing in Bridgewater and Midelburough” to all his children, Sarah Mayo included (Barnstable Probate 3:174, printed in Hawes pp. 23-25). That Bridgewater land was probably his tenth lot in the Titicut purchase that her grandfather Gov. Prence had made with others (Hawes p. 20; inferred). Hawes (p. 22) and Elliot (NEHGR 59:218) say she married Daniel Mayo of Eastham.

Her paternal grandmother Mary, widow of Thomas Howes, became by 1668 the last wife of her maternal grandfather, Gov. Thomas Prence (Elliot, MD 6:230-235).

Through her the line descends from Gov. Thomas Prence, but not from Patience Brewster, so there is no Mayflower descent here.

Open questions

  • Is the broken Mayo stone at Chequesset Neck, Wellfleet (“dy of YO …… DANIEL DIED 65th”), hers? It would fit if she died about 1731-1734. It could also be Mary (Mulford) Mayo’s.
