Mayo Line Research: Sarah Mayo, wife of Deacon Elisha Holbrook
Sarah Mayo (bapt. Truro 1725), first wife of Deacon Elisha Holbrook and mother of Capt. Gideon Holbrook. Her line replaces the "Mary Mayhew" line in Mollie's typescript (Books 2-3); see Mollie_Typescript_Review.md, H4. The Holbrook men themselves are in Holbrook-Master-Family-Tree.md.
Evidence tiers
- [Documented]: a primary record, or a published transcript or abstract of one, with volume and page.
- [Compiled]: a secondary genealogy or online tree.
- [Inference]: our own reasoning from records, with the reason given.
- [Tradition]: family lore, including Mollie's typescript where no record supports it.
Status. Compiled 1 Oct 2026 from research reports written that day. Summary
I traced Sarah's ancestry back to the immigrant, Rev. John Mayo, and also through her mother Mary Mulford.
Bottom line: I found no Mayflower descent through either parent.
- Her father's line runs through John Mayo Jr. and Hannah Lecraft. It does not run through Nathaniel Mayo and Hannah Prence.
- The Prence blood comes in through Sarah's great-grandmother Sarah Prence. Sarah Prence was Gov. Prence's daughter by his second wife Mary Collier, not by Patience Brewster.
- The line does have early Plymouth Colony (non-Mayflower) ancestors:
- Gov. Thomas Prence (Fortune, 1621)
- William Bassett (Fortune, 1621)
- William Collier
- Rev. John Mayo
Two new findings:
- The marriage record says "Annah". Bowman's printed transcript itself reads "Elisha holebrook and Annah Mayo" (MD 20:156). It is not just an index misreading. Daniel's daughter Anna was baptized in June 1729, so she was about 13 in May 1742. The bride must have been Sarah, and "Annah" is an error in the record or in Bowman's reading.
- The rejected 1930s Mayhew line came from a Plymouth record, not Martha's Vineyard. That line would have given a real Brewster descent. The true Mayo line does not.
All MD (Mayflower Descendant) citations are volume:page. All quotes come from archive.org page images or OCR that I checked against the images where marked.

(b) Detail per generation
Generation 1: Sarah and her siblings
No Eastham birth record was found for any of Daniel and Mary's children in MD vols 1-25. The evidence is Truro church baptisms and gravestones.
Truro church baptisms (MD 9:76, 77, 177, 244; checked against page images):
- 1723 Sept 15: "Daniel and Samuel sons of Danll Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:76). On the same day the church admitted "Mary wife of Danll Mayo" (MD 9:77). The word "Dismist" was added to her entry later.
- 1725 June 6: "Sarah Datr of Danll Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:77)
- 1727 April 9: "Martha Datr of Daniel Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:177)
- 1729 June 14: "Anna Datr of Danll Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:244)
Siblings, with dates from records:
- Daniel Jr.
- Duck Creek Cemetery, Wellfleet: "Daniel, husband of Martha, died 14 July, 1800, aged 86 years, 14 days" (MD 12:35). That works out to a birth on about 30 June 1714 [Inference].
- Married: "March 1. 1738/9 Daniel Mayo junr & Martha Holbrook both of Eastham ware Married in Eastham by Mr Isaiah Leues clark" (MD 19:103).
- Martha, his widow, died 12 Dec 1802 aged 80 years, 21 days (MD 12:35).
- Samuel: Duck Creek, "Samuel, died 7 March, 1798, aged 80" (MD 12:36). Born c.1717/18 [Inference].
- Martha:
- Duck Creek: "Martha, wife of Ezekiel; daughter of Daniel Mayo; died 7 June, 1775, aged 48 years, 5 months" (MD 11:228). Born c. Jan 1726/7.
- Married: "Ezekel holbrooks and martha mayo boath of Eastham ware marrid in Eastham by Mr Isaiah Lues minestar in octobar 10 : 1751" (MD 16:142). Their children are recorded there: Sarah 1752, Mercy 1753, Martha 1757, Samuel 1759.
- Mary: Duck Creek, "Mary, wife of Capt. Elisha [Bickford] died 19 May, 1793, at 6 o'clock p.m., in her 63d year" (MD 10:183). Born 1730/31.
- Anna (wife of Barnabas Young) and Mercy (single in 1754): no record found beyond the baptism and the will. WikiTree gives Mercy b. 1 Oct 1738 [Compiled, unsourced].
Sarah's birth date conflict:
- FamilySearch gives b. 6 Dec 1721. I found no source for it.
- When a parent joined the church, the minor children were usually baptized together. Sarah was not baptized with Daniel and Samuel on 15 Sept 1723, but separately in June 1725.
- So she was probably born between Sept 1723 and June 1725 [Inference].
Other records for this generation:
- Gravestones: none was found for Elisha Holbrook's wife Sarah in the Duck Creek Holbrook list (MD 11:227-229).
- 1760 estate division [Compiled, WikiTree citing Barnstable Probate 12:113-116]: "Daniel Mayo, Samuel Mayo, Marcy Mayo, Sarah Holbrook, Mary Bickford, Martha Holbrook, and Anna Young." So Sarah was living in 1760.
WikiTree (Mayo-115, Mulford-23) has errors:
- It puts Daniel III's marriage to Martha Holbrook "before 1751". The record says 1739.
- It gives Sarah as "b. 19 June 1736, m. Theophilus Mayo Jr." That confuses her with Sarah, daughter of Elisha and Martha Mayo of Chatham, "born the July 1 daye 1736" (MD 11:49). It also links that Sarah to the wrong profile.
- It gives Anna's baptism date as her birth date.
Generation 2: Daniel Mayo Sr. and Mary Mulford
Daniel's career in the North Precinct (now Wellfleet) records [Documented]:
- On the precinct committee in 1729 (MD 6:53), 1730 (7:232), 1732 (7:234), 1733 (7:235) and 1734 (8:24).
- Assessor in 1733.
- Precinct treasurer in 1736 (8:27), 1736/7 (10:153), 1741/2 (10:223), 1743/4 and 1744/5 (10:224-225), 1745/6 to 1748/9 (11:73-76) and 1750 (13:184).
- Moderator on 20 Aug 1747 (11:75).
- On committees in 1752 (13:185) and Oct 1754 (13:188).
Conflict: Pratt (p. 143) lists him as treasurer 1742 to 1756, and Freeman (2:686) prints "1742-66". But the records show Zoheth Smith chosen "Clerck & Treasurer" in March 1752 (MD 13:185), and Daniel treasurer as early as 1736.
Why the 1715 administrator is the same man as Mary Mulford's husband [Inference]:
- The 1716 division names Daniel (eldest son) and Jeremiah [Compiled]. Daniel and Jeremiah Mayo appear together in North Precinct lists from 1724 (MD 4:229). Pratt lists both among Wellfleet's early settlers (p. 115).
- Jeremiah married Elizabeth Mulford, Mary's sister, at Truro on 17 June 1725 [Compiled]. Thomas Mulford's 1728 will names both "Mary Mayo" and "Elizabeth Mayo" [Compiled]. Jeremiah's wife's gravestone: "Elizabeth, wife of Jeremiah, died 14 June, 1761, 'aged almost 60 years'" (MD 12:35). Elizabeth Mulford was born 30 June 1701 (MD 8:93), so she was two weeks short of 60.
- Mary joined the Truro church, where her father was Elder (MD 9:77; 10:151).
- The son is "Daniel Mayo junr" in 1739, so the father was the "Senr."
- I found no other Daniel Mayo of the right age in Eastham, 1710 to 1755.
WikiTree cites "The American Genealogist page 196" for the Mulford marriage. That is probably TAG 40:196, in Rachel Barclay's 1964 Mulford article [Inference].
Daniel Sr.'s birth: no record was found.
- He administered his father's estate in April 1715, so he was of age, born 1694 or earlier.
- Mayo-Rodwick says c.1685 [Compiled]; WikiTree says c.1690 [Compiled].
- He was not the "Sarah Mayo the daughter of my son Daniel" (b. c.1689, m. Jonathan Paine 1709) named in his grandfather's 1702 will.
Mary Mulford's birth: "Mary Molford the daughter of Thomas and Mary mulford was borne the twenty Sixth day of June : In the yeare : 1695" (MD 8:93). WikiTree's "6 June 1695" is a misreading.
Mary's death: her estate administration went to Daniel Mayo on 6 May 1760 [Compiled, WikiTree citing Barnstable Probate 10:59].
Generation 3: Daniel Mayo (b. 1664) and Sarah Howes
Birth record, MD 6:205 (checked against the image): "Also a Sonne named Danyell borne the five and twentyeth of June in the yeare one thousand Six hunderd Sixty foure."
- Conflicts: Otis/Swift (Barnstable Families 2:221) prints "Jan. 24, 1664"; chrisman.org has 25 Jan 1664. The record reads June.
Witness signature: "daniel mayo" witnessed Daniel Cole Jr.'s deed to Ichabod Higgins, dated "17 march 1689/90" (MD 2:3).
Grandfather's 1702 will [Compiled transcript]:
- "Item I give my Grandchild Sarah Mayo the daughter of my son Daniel one silver spoon."
- It names "my loving wife Hannah Mayo and my son Daniel Mayo" as executors.
Death and probate [Compiled]:
- Real estate appraised 7 Apr 1715.
- Administration granted to son Daniel on 8 Apr 1715.
- The 1716 division named Daniel (eldest son), Jeremiah, Bethiah, Margery, Sarah Paine, Elizabeth and Mary.
- WikiTree's data field "d. 14 June 1715" conflicts with these dates.
Sarah Howes as his wife:
- Jeremiah Howes's will (14 Aug 1708, Barnstable Probate 3:174), as printed in Hawes p. 25: "It I Do Give unto my Eight Daughters Elizabeth Bacon Sarah Mayo Mary Howes Bethiah Howes Marcey Sturges Susanah Bassett Thankfull Miller and Rebekah Howes out of my movable Estate the sum of six score pounds." He also left his "Land and meadow Lyeing in Bridgewater and Midelburough" to all his children, Sarah Mayo included.
- Hawes p. 22: "20. Sarah, b. m. Daniel Mayo of Eastham."
- NEHGR 59:218 (Elliot, 1905): "Sarah m. Daniel Mayo of Eastham, who was born there 25 June, 1664."
- Supporting points [Inference]: their son was named Jeremiah, and Mayo-Rodwick says Daniel's estate included Middleborough land.
Unidentified stone: at the Chequesset Neck cemetery, Wellfleet, a broken Mayo stone reads "dy of YO ...... DANIEL DIED 65th". The editors judged it was for the wife of a Daniel Mayo (MD 10:20). It could be Sarah (Howes) Mayo, if she died about 1731 to 1734. It could also be Mary (Mulford) Mayo, who would have been in her 65th year in 1759/60. Unresolved.
Generation 4: John Mayo and Hannah Lecraft
Marriage and children (MD 6:205): "John Mayo and Hannah Lecraft ware Mareid the first Day of Jenuary in the year one thousand Six hundered fifty one." The sons recorded are John 1652, William 1654, James 1656, Samuel 1658, Elisha 1661, Danyell 1664, Nathaniel 1667, Thomas 1670 (died 1670) and Thomas 1672.
PCR 8:26 has a different reading: "John Mayo was married to Hannah Reycraft the first of January, 1650." Hannah's parents are unknown.
Death: Hawes p. 32 says "d. before Oct. 28, 1706, at Eastham." His will was dated June 1702 and his inventory sworn 4 Nov 1706 (Barnstable Probate 3:324, 326).
Son of Rev. John Mayo:
- MD 9:121 [Documented]: the estate was to go to "the three surviving Children of the said Mr Mayo". It was signed by "John Mayo", by "Joseph howes" and by Thomas Huckins "In the behalfe of hannah Bacon".
- Pratt p. 23: "1651. Mr. John Mayo, son of the minister, was married to Miss Hannah Lecraft."
- John's own will leaves "a wine cup that my Father gave me" [Compiled].
Generation 5: Rev. John Mayo
Death: "Rev. John Mayo died at Yarmouth, Mass., in May, 1676, without having made a will" (MD 9:119, Bowman).
Inventory, 1 June 1676 (MD 9:120): "Impr : in silver 35 00 00". The total was £111 4s.
Origins [Compiled]: WikiTree cites Nickerson (NEHGR 95:39-49, 100-108; 103:32-42) for:
- baptism "John Maio" 16 Oct 1597, Farthinghoe
- Magdalen Hall, Oxford, 1615
- a father, John Mayo of Thorpe Mandeville (will 1629/30)
Wife (mother of John Jr.) unknown. Three theories, all unproven:
- a Leiden marriage of 21 Mar 1618, "Jan Meyer" to "Timmosijn Breyck" (Mayo-Rodwick)
- Margaret Soden, Swalcliffe, 1619
- that the widow "Tamasin" was a second wife, possibly the widow of William Lumpkin
(c) The Mayflower question
- Not through Nathaniel Mayo and Hannah Prence [Documented]. Daniel (b. 1664) was a son of John and Hannah (Lecraft), per MD 6:205. Nathaniel and Hannah Prence were his uncle and aunt, not ancestors.
- Prence descent is real but not Brewster [Documented link; Inference on the mother].
- Gov. Prence's will (MD 3:204): "Item I give to my Daughter Sarah howes my bigest beer bowle." The will lists his daughters as "hannah Marcye Jane Mary Elizabeth, Sarah and Judith".
- Sarah's gravestone (NEHGR 59:217): "Sarah Hows Wife to Jeremiah Hows Departed this life March ye 3d 1706 in ye 60th Year of Her age." So she was born c.1646/7.
- Patience Brewster died in 1634, and Prence married Mary Collier on 1 Apr 1635. So Sarah was Mary Collier's daughter.
- Hawes p. 19 says so: "Her mother was Mary² (William¹) Collier of Duxbury, her father's second wife." Elliot (NEHGR 59:218) adds: "the name Patience is never met with in the early branches of the Howes descendants."
- Status: no Brewster descent. Prence himself came on the Fortune, not the Mayflower.
- Snow/Hopkins: none found in any line.
- Mulford, Bassett, Joyce and Barnes lines: no Mayflower passenger. William Bassett came on the Fortune (1621) [Compiled, GMB].
- WikiTree's Bassett-300 profile lists Brewster, Cooke, Fuller, Howland, Tilley and Warren as Mary Bassett's Mayflower ancestors. That is unsupported. Her parents per her father's will are Nathaniel Bassett and Dorcas Joyce, and neither has a known Mayflower line.
- Early Plymouth Colony ancestors that are documented or compiled:
- Gov. Thomas Prence (Fortune 1621)
- William Collier (Prence's father-in-law)
- William Bassett (Fortune 1621)
- Thomas Howes of Yarmouth
- John Joyce of Yarmouth
- Rev. John Mayo
- The Mayhew mix-up:
- The typescript's "Mary Mayhew, b. 22 Apr 1742, dau. of Thomas Mayhew and Mary Witherell" matches a Plymouth record, not a Martha's Vineyard one: "The Children of Thomas Mayhew, & Mary Mayhew his Wife Mary Mayhew, Born April 22nd 1742. Deceasd Feb 9th 1812" (MD 19:90). The intention was "A purpose of marriage between mr Thomas Mayhew & mrs Mary Wethrell both of Plymouth february 8th 1739/40" (MD 18:31).
- Pane-Joyce: Mary Witherell, b. 5 Jun 1722, dau. of Thomas Witherell and Rebecca Knowles; Rebecca was dau. of Samuel Knowles and Mercy Freeman [Compiled]. Mercy Freeman was the daughter of John Freeman and Mercy Prence (Prence and Patience Brewster). So the wrong Mayhew line would carry Brewster descent; the true Mayo line does not. [Compiled]
- Possible causes of the mix-up [Inference]:
- Daniel's will names two daughters married to men called Elisha: "Sarah the wife of Elisha Holbrook" and "Mary the wife of Elisha Bigford". A compiler could have attached "Mary" to Elisha Holbrook.
- The Mayhew birth (MD 19:90) and the Holbrook marriage (MD 20:156) are bound in the same archive.org volume and index.
- The Mayhew birth year, 1742, is the same as the Holbrook marriage year.
- I could not find whom this Mary Mayhew married. Nothing suggests she married a Holbrook.
(d) Anecdotes (verbatim)
- 1662, PCR 4:22: "a sertaine Nantuckett Indian named Tetannett, allis Ned, was, for pilfering and stealing sundry thinges from John Mayo, of Eastham, centanced by the Court to bee publickly whipt, and alsoe warned ... being a stranger in our goũment, to depart to his owne place att Nantuckett." This is the John Mayo of generation 4 [Inference by date].
- 1664/5, PCR 4:100, account of liquor brought into Eastham: "John Mayo, two gallons of liquor."
- 1667, PCR 4:169: John Mayo sat on the inquest into "the death of a child of Daniell Dones, whoe was drownded in a well". The verdict was accidental drowning.
- Oct 1686, PCR 6:203: barrels of "mackrill caught with sains at Cape Cod, contrary to order of Court" were seized. "Capt Jonathan Sparrow, of Eastham, as attorney for Saml Smith & John Mayo, of sd Eastham, to defend their interest in sd mackrill". This could be John (b. c.1630) or his son John (b. 1652).
- 1689/90, Samuel Sewall's Letter-Book, MHS Coll. 6th ser. 1:94-95: "To Mr. John Mayo at Eastham. Boston, Janr 6th, 1689, When you were last att my house you spake of returning hether this winter Laden with oyll if the Ice did not hinder." Again, either John.
- King Philip's War: Bodge p. 72 lists a "John Mayo" under Moseley, credited 20 Dec 1675. Whether this is the Eastham man is unproven.
- 1680/1, whaling, Hawes p. 20: Jeremiah Howes, with Joseph and Samuel Howes, was to "secure for it all such whales as should be cast up between Sawsuit Harbor mouth and Yarmouth Harbor for £4 a whale." This is Hawes's paraphrase of the Yarmouth town agreement, not a quote of the record.
- 1709/10, Nathaniel Bassett's will (Barnstable Probate 3:146, WikiTree transcript): "I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Mulford my box that was and my Chest that was her Mothers and my great Chest that I gave to her mother and I also give unto her my sd Daughter my great Byble and my great Booke that is an exposition upon the epistle of Plimemon & also so much of my estate as will by each of her children a pocket Byble."
- 22 June 1724, MD 4:229: Daniel, Jeremiah, Samuel and Elisha Mayo were among those who "entred there denial against mr Josiah Oakes any Longer continuing in ye work of ye ministry in this precinct".
- 1734, Truro church (MD 10:150, 151): "Coffe negro servant to Elder Mulford Adult" was baptized and admitted. Elder Thomas Mulford, Mary's father, held an enslaved man named Coffe.
- 24 Mar 1741/2, MD 10:223: "Voted that Daniel Mayo be agent to prosecute ye defective Constables Barnabas Young and Eleazer attwood." Daniel's daughter Anna later married a Barnabas Young.
- 18 Mar 1744/5, MD 10:225: "Voted that Daniel mayo be impowerd to dispose of those two spots for pews that remain unsold and repair the glass of the Meeting House."
- 20 Aug 1747, MD 11:75: "mr Daniel mayo was choosen Moderator ... Made Choice of Zoheth Smith and Elisha Holbrooks agents to petition the General Court to abate our part of the province tax ... more Especially by reason of the present Spreading of the Small pox amongst us." This puts Sarah's father and husband at the same meeting.
- 20 May 1749, MD 11:77: the pews were recorded, including "ye South East Corner pew to Daniel mayo".
- 1763, Freeman 2:661: a district road ran "between Dan'l and Sam'l Mayo's dwellings and their orchard fence, to the southerly side of a swamp near Dan'l Mayo's barn". These are Sarah's brothers.

Addendum, 2 October 2026: findings from the life-details pass
Sarah Prence's mother is less certain than stated above
Sections (a) and (c) give Sarah Prence's mother as Mary Collier. Compiled sources disagree.
- Mary Collier. Hawes (p. 19) and Jacobus/Parke (1960) give Sarah to Mary Collier. [Compiled]
- Not certain. Stratton (Plymouth Colony, 1986, pp. 340-341, as quoted on Wikipedia) has Mary Collier dying about 1644 and gives her only Jane and Mary. The Plimoth Plantation sketch says it "is not certain which wife was the mother" of Judith, Elizabeth and Sarah. [Compiled]
- Elliot (MD 6:234). He wrote only that Mary Collier's death "is very uncertain, but it must have been previous to December 8, 1662." [Compiled]
- [Inference] Consequences.
- If Sarah, b. about 1646/7, was the daughter of the third wife, Apphia (Quicke) Freeman, the Colliers drop out of this line.
- The "no Brewster descent" conclusion stands either way, because Patience Brewster died in 1634.
- The tree now marks the Collier link as unproven.
- [Compiled] Prence's last wife was Mary, widow of Thomas Howes (Elliot, MD 6:230-235). Sarah's last stepmother was therefore also her husband Jeremiah Howes's mother.
- Capt. Thomas Howes's will of 15 Jan 1675/6 asks that "my Mother Prence Injoy without molestation During her Naturall life the house shee Now lives in" (MD 6:162, 233).
Elizabeth Barnes's parents: Thomas and Anna Barnes of Hingham
- [Compiled] The family record. The History of the Town of Hingham (vol. 2, Barnes genealogy, p. 23) lists among Thomas Barnes's children "Elizabeth, Dec. 8, 1644. m. Murfea, or Murfett."
- [Inference] "Murfea/Murfett" is very likely a mis-rendering of Mulford, matching TAG 40:193-198 as cited by WikiTree.
- Thomas Barnes.
- [Compiled] An early settler, granted a three-acre house lot on Bachelor (now Main) Street in 1637. Farmer and weaver; his inventory includes "weaving material." His will is dated 29 Apr 1671.
- [Documented, as transcribed] Gravestone: "THOMAS BARNS AGED 70 YEARS DYED YE 29 DAY OF NOUEMBER. 1672."
- Anna, his wife. She died 5 Apr 1691. [Compiled]
- Next step. The 1671 will, which "gives the names of w. and ch.," was not seen. Checking it for a married daughter Elizabeth would firm up the link.
Other details added to the tree
Thomas Howes's will and inventory (MD 6:157-160) [Documented]
- His will of 26 Sept 1665 required son Thomas to have grandson Samuel taught "the Trad of a Cooper."
- His inventory lists "3 guns a Case of Pistolls & holsters ... one halbert a sword and belt," "a paire of gold waightes," "7 hives of bees," "2 bibles & other bookes" and "Desparate Debts Due from the Indians."
Nathaniel Bassett
- [Documented] In 1651/2 he and Joseph Prior were fined 20s for "desturbing the church of Duxburrow on the Lords day." The alternative sentence was to be "bound vnto a post for the space of two houres ... with a paper on theire heades on which theire capital crime shalbe written" (PCR 3:4).
- [Documented] In 1656 his father deeded South River land to "my two sonnes there liveing viz Perigrine White and Nathaniell Bassett" (MD 10:25-27).
- [Compiled] Peregrine White, born aboard the Mayflower, was his brother-in-law.
# Mayo Line Research: Sarah Mayo, wife of Deacon Elisha HolbrookSarah Mayo (bapt. Truro 1725), first wife of Deacon Elisha Holbrook and mother of Capt. Gideon Holbrook. Her line replaces the "Mary Mayhew" line in Mollie's typescript (Books 2-3); see Mollie_Typescript_Review.md, H4. The Holbrook men themselves are in Holbrook-Master-Family-Tree.md.**Evidence tiers**- **[Documented]:** a primary record, or a published transcript or abstract of one, with volume and page.- **[Compiled]:** a secondary genealogy or online tree.- **[Inference]:** our own reasoning from records, with the reason given.- **[Tradition]:** family lore, including Mollie's typescript where no record supports it.**Status.** Compiled 1 Oct 2026 from research reports written that day. They draw on online sources: archive.org full texts of printed vital records and genealogies, NEHGR, TAG as quoted online, WikiTree, Pane-Joyce and newspapers. Quotations are as read in those sources; OCR-derived quotations may carry small reading errors. Nothing here has yet been checked against original manuscripts or images, except where a section says so.---## SummaryI traced Sarah's ancestry back to the immigrant, Rev. John Mayo, and also through her mother Mary Mulford.**Bottom line:** I found no *Mayflower* descent through either parent.- Her father's line runs through John Mayo Jr. and Hannah Lecraft. It does not run through Nathaniel Mayo and Hannah Prence.- The Prence blood comes in through Sarah's great-grandmother Sarah Prence. Sarah Prence was Gov. Prence's daughter by his second wife Mary Collier, not by Patience Brewster.- The line does have early Plymouth Colony (non-*Mayflower*) ancestors:- Gov. Thomas Prence (*Fortune*, 1621)- William Bassett (*Fortune*, 1621)- William Collier- Rev. John Mayo**Two new findings:**- **The marriage record says "Annah".** Bowman's printed transcript itself reads "Elisha holebrook and Annah Mayo" (MD 20:156). It is not just an index misreading. Daniel's daughter Anna was baptized in June 1729, so she was about 13 in May 1742. The bride must have been Sarah, and "Annah" is an error in the record or in Bowman's reading.- **The rejected 1930s Mayhew line came from a Plymouth record, not Martha's Vineyard.** That line would have given a real Brewster descent. The true Mayo line does not.All MD (*Mayflower Descendant*) citations are volume:page. All quotes come from archive.org page images or OCR that I checked against the images where marked.---## (a) Line of descent**Paternal line to the immigrant**| Gen. | Person | Dates | Spouse, marriage | Evidence for the parent-child link ||---|---|---|---|---|| 1 | **Sarah Mayo** | bp. 6 June 1725, Truro church, as "Sarah Datr of Danll Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:77). The evidence is Truro church baptisms and gravestones.**Truro church baptisms** (MD 9:76, 77, 177, 244; checked against page images):- 1723 Sept 15: "Daniel and Samuel sons of Danll Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:76). On the same day the church admitted "Mary wife of Danll Mayo" (MD 9:77). The word "Dismist" was added to her entry later.- 1725 June 6: "Sarah Datr of Danll Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:77)- 1727 April 9: "Martha Datr of Daniel Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:177)- 1729 June 14: "Anna Datr of Danll Mayo of Eastham" (MD 9:244)**Siblings, with dates from records:**- **Daniel Jr.**- Duck Creek Cemetery, Wellfleet: "Daniel, husband of Martha, died 14 July, 1800, aged 86 years, 14 days" (MD 12:35). That works out to a birth on about 30 June 1714 [Inference].- Married: "March 1. 1738/9 Daniel Mayo junr & Martha Holbrook both of Eastham ware Married in Eastham by Mr Isaiah Leues clark" (MD 19:103).- Martha, his widow, died 12 Dec 1802 aged 80 years, 21 days (MD 12:35).- **Samuel:** Duck Creek, "Samuel, died 7 March, 1798, aged 80" (MD 12:36). Born c.1717/18 [Inference].- **Martha:**- Duck Creek: "Martha, wife of Ezekiel; daughter of Daniel Mayo; died 7 June, 1775, aged 48 years, 5 months" (MD 11:228). Born c. Jan 1726/7.- Married: "Ezekel holbrooks and martha mayo boath of Eastham ware marrid in Eastham by Mr Isaiah Lues minestar in octobar 10 : 1751" (MD 16:142). Their children are recorded there: Sarah 1752, Mercy 1753, Martha 1757, Samuel 1759.- **Mary:** Duck Creek, "Mary, wife of Capt. Elisha [Bickford] died 19 May, 1793, at 6 o'clock p.m., in her 63d year" (MD 10:183). Born 1730/31.- **Anna** (wife of Barnabas Young) and **Mercy** (single in 1754): no record found beyond the baptism and the will. WikiTree gives Mercy b. 1 Oct 1738 [Compiled, unsourced].**Sarah's birth date conflict:**- FamilySearch gives b. 6 Dec 1721. I found no source for it.- When a parent joined the church, the minor children were usually baptized together. Sarah was not baptized with Daniel and Samuel on 15 Sept 1723, but separately in June 1725.- So she was probably born between Sept 1723 and June 1725 [Inference].**Other records for this generation:**- **Gravestones:** none was found for Elisha Holbrook's wife Sarah in the Duck Creek Holbrook list (MD 11:227-229).- **1760 estate division** [Compiled, WikiTree citing Barnstable Probate 12:113-116]: "Daniel Mayo, Samuel Mayo, Marcy Mayo, Sarah Holbrook, Mary Bickford, Martha Holbrook, and Anna Young." So Sarah was living in 1760.**WikiTree (Mayo-115, Mulford-23) has errors:**- It puts Daniel III's marriage to Martha Holbrook "before 1751". The record says 1739.- It gives Sarah as "b. 19 June 1736, m. Theophilus Mayo Jr." That confuses her with Sarah, daughter of Elisha and Martha Mayo of Chatham, "born the July 1 daye 1736" (MD 11:49). It also links that Sarah to the wrong profile.- It gives Anna's baptism date as her birth date.### Generation 2: Daniel Mayo Sr. and Mary Mulford**Daniel's career in the North Precinct** (now Wellfleet) records [Documented]:- On the precinct committee in 1729 (MD 6:53), 1730 (7:232), 1732 (7:234), 1733 (7:235) and 1734 (8:24).- Assessor in 1733.- Precinct treasurer in 1736 (8:27), 1736/7 (10:153), 1741/2 (10:223), 1743/4 and 1744/5 (10:224-225), 1745/6 to 1748/9 (11:73-76) and 1750 (13:184).- Moderator on 20 Aug 1747 (11:75).- On committees in 1752 (13:185) and Oct 1754 (13:188).Conflict: Pratt (p. 143) lists him as treasurer 1742 to 1756, and Freeman (2:686) prints "1742-66". But the records show Zoheth Smith chosen "Clerck & Treasurer" in March 1752 (MD 13:185), and Daniel treasurer as early as 1736.**Why the 1715 administrator is the same man as Mary Mulford's husband** [Inference]:1. The 1716 division names Daniel (eldest son) and Jeremiah [Compiled]. Daniel and Jeremiah Mayo appear together in North Precinct lists from 1724 (MD 4:229). Pratt lists both among Wellfleet's early settlers (p. 115).2. Jeremiah married Elizabeth Mulford, Mary's sister, at Truro on 17 June 1725 [Compiled]. Thomas Mulford's 1728 will names both "Mary Mayo" and "Elizabeth Mayo" [Compiled]. Jeremiah's wife's gravestone: "Elizabeth, wife of Jeremiah, died 14 June, 1761, 'aged almost 60 years'" (MD 12:35). Elizabeth Mulford was born 30 June 1701 (MD 8:93), so she was two weeks short of 60.3. Mary joined the Truro church, where her father was Elder (MD 9:77; 10:151).4. The son is "Daniel Mayo junr" in 1739, so the father was the "Senr."5. I found no other Daniel Mayo of the right age in Eastham, 1710 to 1755.WikiTree cites "The American Genealogist page 196" for the Mulford marriage. That is probably TAG 40:196, in Rachel Barclay's 1964 Mulford article [Inference].**Daniel Sr.'s birth:** no record was found.- He administered his father's estate in April 1715, so he was of age, born 1694 or earlier.- Mayo-Rodwick says c.1685 [Compiled]; WikiTree says c.1690 [Compiled].- He was not the "Sarah Mayo the daughter of my son Daniel" (b. c.1689, m. Jonathan Paine 1709) named in his grandfather's 1702 will.**Mary Mulford's birth:** "Mary Molford the daughter of Thomas and Mary mulford was borne the twenty Sixth day of June : In the yeare : 1695" (MD 8:93). WikiTree's "6 June 1695" is a misreading.**Mary's death:** her estate administration went to Daniel Mayo on 6 May 1760 [Compiled, WikiTree citing Barnstable Probate 10:59].### Generation 3: Daniel Mayo (b. 1664) and Sarah Howes**Birth record, MD 6:205** (checked against the image): "Also a Sonne named Danyell borne the five and twentyeth of June in the yeare one thousand Six hunderd Sixty foure."- Conflicts: Otis/Swift (Barnstable Families 2:221) prints "Jan. 24, 1664"; chrisman.org has 25 Jan 1664. The record reads June.**Witness signature:** "daniel mayo" witnessed Daniel Cole Jr.'s deed to Ichabod Higgins, dated "17 march 1689/90" (MD 2:3).**Grandfather's 1702 will** [Compiled transcript]:- "Item I give my Grandchild Sarah Mayo the daughter of my son Daniel one silver spoon."- It names "my loving wife Hannah Mayo and my son Daniel Mayo" as executors.**Death and probate** [Compiled]:- Real estate appraised 7 Apr 1715.- Administration granted to son Daniel on 8 Apr 1715.- The 1716 division named Daniel (eldest son), Jeremiah, Bethiah, Margery, Sarah Paine, Elizabeth and Mary.- WikiTree's data field "d. 14 June 1715" conflicts with these dates.**Sarah Howes as his wife:**- Jeremiah Howes's will (14 Aug 1708, Barnstable Probate 3:174), as printed in Hawes p. 25: "It I Do Give unto my Eight Daughters Elizabeth Bacon Sarah Mayo Mary Howes Bethiah Howes Marcey Sturges Susanah Bassett Thankfull Miller and Rebekah Howes out of my movable Estate the sum of six score pounds." He also left his "Land and meadow Lyeing in Bridgewater and Midelburough" to all his children, Sarah Mayo included.- Hawes p. 22: "20. Sarah, b. m. Daniel Mayo of Eastham."- NEHGR 59:218 (Elliot, 1905): "Sarah m. Daniel Mayo of Eastham, who was born there 25 June, 1664."- Supporting points [Inference]: their son was named Jeremiah, and Mayo-Rodwick says Daniel's estate included Middleborough land.**Unidentified stone:** at the Chequesset Neck cemetery, Wellfleet, a broken Mayo stone reads "dy of YO ...... Unresolved.### Generation 4: John Mayo and Hannah Lecraft**Marriage and children** (MD 6:205): "John Mayo and Hannah Lecraft ware Mareid the first Day of Jenuary in the year one thousand Six hundered fifty one." The sons recorded are John 1652, William 1654, James 1656, Samuel 1658, Elisha 1661, Danyell 1664, Nathaniel 1667, Thomas 1670 (died 1670) and Thomas 1672.**PCR 8:26 has a different reading:** "John Mayo was married to Hannah Reycraft the first of January, 1650." Hannah's parents are unknown.**Death:** Hawes p. 32 says "d. before Oct. 28, 1706, at Eastham." His will was dated June 1702 and his inventory sworn 4 Nov 1706 (Barnstable Probate 3:324, 326).**Son of Rev. John Mayo:**- MD 9:121 [Documented]: the estate was to go to "the three surviving Children of the said Mr Mayo". It was signed by "John Mayo", by "Joseph howes" and by Thomas Huckins "In the behalfe of hannah Bacon".- Pratt p. 23: "1651. Mr. John Mayo, son of the minister, was married to Miss Hannah Lecraft."- John's own will leaves "a wine cup that my Father gave me" [Compiled].### Generation 5: Rev. John Mayo**Death:** "Rev. John Mayo died at Yarmouth, Mass., in May, 1676, without having made a will" (MD 9:119, Bowman).**Inventory, 1 June 1676** (MD 9:120): "Impr : in silver 35 00 00". The total was £111 4s.**Origins** [Compiled]: WikiTree cites Nickerson (NEHGR 95:39-49, 100-108; 103:32-42) for:- baptism "John Maio" 16 Oct 1597, Farthinghoe- Magdalen Hall, Oxford, 1615- a father, John Mayo of Thorpe Mandeville (will 1629/30)**Wife (mother of John Jr.) unknown.** Three theories, all unproven:- a Leiden marriage of 21 Mar 1618, "Jan Meyer" to "Timmosijn Breyck" (Mayo-Rodwick)- Margaret Soden, Swalcliffe, 1619- that the widow "Tamasin" was a second wife, possibly the widow of William Lumpkin---## (c) The *Mayflower* question1. **Not through Nathaniel Mayo and Hannah Prence** [Documented]. Daniel (b. 1664) was a son of John and Hannah (Lecraft), per MD 6:205. Nathaniel and Hannah Prence were his uncle and aunt, not ancestors.2. **Prence descent is real but not Brewster** [Documented link; Inference on the mother].- Gov. Prence's will (MD 3:204): "Item I give to my Daughter Sarah howes my bigest beer bowle." The will lists his daughters as "hannah Marcye Jane Mary Elizabeth, Sarah and Judith".- Sarah's gravestone (NEHGR 59:217): "Sarah Hows Wife to Jeremiah Hows Departed this life March ye 3d 1706 in ye 60th Year of Her age." So she was born c.1646/7.- Patience Brewster died in 1634, and Prence married Mary Collier on 1 Apr 1635. So Sarah was Mary Collier's daughter.- Hawes p. 19 says so: "Her mother was Mary² (William¹) Collier of Duxbury, her father's second wife." Elliot (NEHGR 59:218) adds: "the name Patience is never met with in the early branches of the Howes descendants."- **Status: no Brewster descent.** Prence himself came on the *Fortune*, not the *Mayflower*.3. **Snow/Hopkins:** none found in any line.4. **Mulford, Bassett, Joyce and Barnes lines:** no *Mayflower* passenger. William Bassett came on the *Fortune* (1621) [Compiled, GMB].- WikiTree's Bassett-300 profile lists Brewster, Cooke, Fuller, Howland, Tilley and Warren as Mary Bassett's *Mayflower* ancestors. That is unsupported. Her parents per her father's will are Nathaniel Bassett and Dorcas Joyce, and neither has a known *Mayflower* line.5. **Early Plymouth Colony ancestors that are documented or compiled:**- Gov. Thomas Prence (*Fortune* 1621)- William Collier (Prence's father-in-law)- William Bassett (*Fortune* 1621)- Thomas Howes of Yarmouth- John Joyce of Yarmouth- Rev. John Mayo6. **The Mayhew mix-up:**- The typescript's "Mary Mayhew, b. 22 Apr 1742, dau. of Thomas Mayhew and Mary Witherell" matches a **Plymouth** record, not a Martha's Vineyard one: "The Children of Thomas Mayhew, & Mary Mayhew his Wife Mary Mayhew, Born April 22nd 1742. Deceasd Feb 9th 1812" (MD 19:90). The intention was "A purpose of marriage between mr Thomas Mayhew & mrs Mary Wethrell both of Plymouth february 8th 1739/40" (MD 18:31).- Pane-Joyce: Mary Witherell, b. So **the wrong Mayhew line would carry Brewster descent; the true Mayo line does not.** [Compiled]- **Possible causes of the mix-up** [Inference]:- Daniel's will names two daughters married to men called Elisha: "Sarah the wife of Elisha Holbrook" and "Mary the wife of Elisha Bigford". A compiler could have attached "Mary" to Elisha Holbrook.- The Mayhew birth (MD 19:90) and the Holbrook marriage (MD 20:156) are bound in the same archive.org volume and index.- The Mayhew birth year, 1742, is the same as the Holbrook marriage year.- I could not find whom this Mary Mayhew married. Nothing suggests she married a Holbrook.---## (d) Anecdotes (verbatim)- **1662, PCR 4:22:** "a sertaine Nantuckett Indian named Tetannett, allis Ned, was, for pilfering and stealing sundry thinges from John Mayo, of Eastham, centanced by the Court to bee publickly whipt, and alsoe warned ... being a stranger in our goũment, to depart to his owne place att Nantuckett." This is the John Mayo of generation 4 [Inference by date].- **1664/5, PCR 4:100**, account of liquor brought into Eastham: "John Mayo, two gallons of liquor."- **1667, PCR 4:169:** John Mayo sat on the inquest into "the death of a child of Daniell Dones, whoe was drownded in a well". "Capt Jonathan Sparrow, of Eastham, as attorney for Saml Smith & John Mayo, of sd Eastham, to defend their interest in sd mackrill". This could be John (b. c.1630) or his son John (b. 1652).- **1689/90**, Samuel Sewall's Letter-Book, MHS Coll. 6th ser. 1:94-95: "To Mr. John Mayo at Eastham. Boston, Janr 6th, 1689, When you were last att my house you spake of returning hether this winter Laden with oyll if the Ice did not hinder." Again, either John.- **King Philip's War:** Bodge p. 72 lists a "John Mayo" under Moseley, credited 20 Dec 1675. Whether this is the Eastham man is unproven.- **1680/1, whaling, Hawes p. 20:** Jeremiah Howes, with Joseph and Samuel Howes, was to "secure for it all such whales as should be cast up between Sawsuit Harbor mouth and Yarmouth Harbor for £4 a whale." This is Hawes's paraphrase of the Yarmouth town agreement, not a quote of the record.- **1709/10, Nathaniel Bassett's will** (Barnstable Probate 3:146, WikiTree transcript): "I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Mulford my box that was and my Chest that was her Mothers and my great Chest that I gave to her mother and I also give unto her my sd Daughter my great Byble and my great Booke that is an exposition upon the epistle of Plimemon & also so much of my estate as will by each of her children a pocket Byble."- **22 June 1724, MD 4:229:** Daniel, Jeremiah, Samuel and Elisha Mayo were among those who "entred there denial against mr Josiah Oakes any Longer continuing in ye work of ye ministry in this precinct".- **1734, Truro church** (MD 10:150, 151): "Coffe negro servant to Elder Mulford Adult" was baptized and admitted. Daniel's daughter Anna later married a Barnabas Young.- **18 Mar 1744/5, MD 10:225:** "Voted that Daniel mayo be impowerd to dispose of those two spots for pews that remain unsold and repair the glass of the Meeting House."- **20 Aug 1747, MD 11:75:** "mr Daniel mayo was choosen Moderator ... Made Choice of Zoheth Smith and Elisha Holbrooks agents to petition the General Court to abate our part of the province tax ... more Especially by reason of the present Spreading of the Small pox amongst us." This puts Sarah's father and husband at the same meeting.- **20 May 1749, MD 11:77:** the pews were recorded, including "ye South East Corner pew to Daniel mayo".- **1763, Freeman 2:661:** a district road ran "between Dan'l and Sam'l Mayo's dwellings and their orchard fence, to the southerly side of a swamp near Dan'l Mayo's barn". These are Sarah's brothers.---## (e) Open questions and records still to get1. **The 1742 marriage:** get the image of the original Eastham record (town book p. 142) and the 1 Apr 1742 intention, to settle "Annah" against Sarah.2. **Barnstable probate images on FamilySearch, to check against the compiled transcripts:**- Daniel Mayo (1664): 3:203, 253, 241-242- John Mayo: 3:324-326- Jeremiah Howes: 3:174- Nathaniel Bassett: 3:144-148- Thomas Mulford: 8:331-332- Daniel Sr.: will 9:136-138- Mary Mayo: administration 10:59; inventory 12:89-90; division 12:113-1163. **MD volumes 26-34 are not on archive.org.** The index shows Mayo and Holbrook entries likely to include Elisha and Sarah's children's births: Daniel/Martha at 28:181; Elisha/Sarah at 29:13; Gideon/Sarah at 29:129; Daniel/Mary at 30:73; Holbrooks at 30:73-76.4. **MD vols 13-14 (combined file)** failed to download (server error 500). Compiled sources disagree.- **Mary Collier.** Hawes (p. 19) and Jacobus/Parke (1960) give Sarah to Mary Collier. [Compiled]- **Not certain.** Stratton (*Plymouth Colony*, 1986, pp. 340-341, as quoted on Wikipedia) has Mary Collier dying about 1644 and gives her only Jane and Mary. The Plimoth Plantation sketch says it "is not certain which wife was the mother" of Judith, Elizabeth and Sarah. [Compiled]- **Elliot (MD 6:234).** He wrote only that Mary Collier's death "is very uncertain, but it must have been previous to December 8, 1662." [Compiled]- **[Inference] Consequences.**- If Sarah, b. about 1646/7, was the daughter of the third wife, Apphia (Quicke) Freeman, the Colliers drop out of this line.- The "no Brewster descent" conclusion stands either way, because Patience Brewster died in 1634.- The tree now marks the Collier link as unproven.- **[Compiled] Prence's last wife was Mary, widow of Thomas Howes** (Elliot, MD 6:230-235). Sarah's last stepmother was therefore also her husband Jeremiah Howes's mother.- Capt. Thomas Howes's will of 15 Jan 1675/6 asks that "my Mother Prence Injoy without molestation During her Naturall life the house shee Now lives in" (MD 6:162, 233).### Elizabeth Barnes's parents: Thomas and Anna Barnes of Hingham- **[Compiled] The family record.** The *History of the Town of Hingham* (vol. 2, Barnes genealogy, p. 23) lists among Thomas Barnes's children "Elizabeth, Dec. 8, 1644. m. Murfea, or Murfett."- [Inference] "Murfea/Murfett" is very likely a mis-rendering of Mulford, matching TAG 40:193-198 as cited by WikiTree.- **Thomas Barnes.**- [Compiled] An early settler, granted a three-acre house lot on Bachelor (now Main) Street in 1637. Farmer and weaver; his inventory includes "weaving material." His will is dated 29 Apr 1671.- [Documented, as transcribed] Gravestone: "THOMAS BARNS AGED 70 YEARS DYED YE 29 DAY OF NOUEMBER. 1672."- **Anna, his wife.** She died 5 Apr 1691. [Compiled]- **Next step.** The 1671 will, which "gives the names of w. and ch.," was not seen. Checking it for a married daughter Elizabeth would firm up the link.### Other details added to the tree**Thomas Howes's will and inventory** (MD 6:157-160) [Documented]- His will of 26 Sept 1665 required son Thomas to have grandson Samuel taught "the Trad of a Cooper."- His inventory lists "3 guns a Case of Pistolls & holsters ... one halbert a sword and belt," "a paire of gold waightes," "7 hives of bees," "2 bibles & other bookes" and "Desparate Debts Due from the Indians."**Nathaniel Bassett**- [Documented] In 1651/2 he and Joseph Prior were fined 20s for "desturbing the church of Duxburrow on the Lords day." The alternative sentence was to be "bound vnto a post for the space of two houres ... with a paper on theire heades on which theire capital crime shalbe written" (PCR 3:4).- [Documented] In 1656 his father deeded South River land to "my two sonnes there liveing viz Perigrine White and Nathaniell Bassett" (MD 10:25-27).- [Compiled] Peregrine White, born aboard the *Mayflower*, was his brother-in-law.
