Sarah Chittenden

Also Sarah Holbrook

Wife of John Holbrook of Scituate and Eastham, whom she married at Scituate in 1709. Mother of Elisha Holbrook (b. 1716), and probably of seven more of his children born 1710-1729. She was probably the Sarah born at Scituate in 1688 to Stephen Chittenden, probably by his wife Mehitable Buck.

    Born
    12 Mar 1688, Scituate, Massachusetts

"Sarah, d. Stephen, Mar. 12, 1688" (Scituate VR 1:68; the archive.org OCR reads "i638"). That this is John Holbrook's wife is inferred: no other Sarah Chittenden was born at Scituate near that date. The FamilySearch tree has 1688.

Family

Father
Stephen Chittenden b. 1654

The birth record names Stephen as her father; that this Sarah is the one who married John Holbrook in 1709 is inferred (no other Sarah Chittenden born at Scituate near 1688). Pane-Joyce agrees.

Mother
Mehitable Buck

Stephen Chittenden's wife Mehetable Buck, married 1679; the birth record names only the father. Pane-Joyce has her as the mother.

Notes

Wife of John Holbrook (1686-by 1749) of Scituate and Eastham: “John and Sarah Chittenden, May 3, 1709” (Scituate VR 2:151). Named as Elisha’s mother in his birth record (“Elisha, s. Jo[h]n Jr. and Sarah”).

Born at Scituate on 12 Mar 1688, a daughter of Stephen Chittenden (Scituate VR 1:68). The same page has “Sarah, d. Steph[en], bp. May 2, 1708,” from the church record: baptized the year before her marriage. No other Sarah Chittenden was born at Scituate near 1688; the next is Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, born 1 Dec 1712 (VR 1:68). Pane-Joyce agrees (compiled): born 12 Mar 1688 to Stephen Chittenden and Mehitable Buck, married John Holbrook 3 May 1709.

By Deane’s account two of her relatives died in King Philip’s War. Her grandfather Isaac Chittenden “fell in repulsing the Indians from the Town 1676” (Deane p. 232; doubted, see Isaac Chittenden). Her uncle Benjamin Chittenden was killed with Capt. Michael Pierce on 26 March 1676 (Newman’s letter, Deane p. 123). Pierce was her husband’s grandfather, if, as is inferred, her husband’s mother was Abigail Pierce.

Open questions

  • Her death and burial have not been found (Scituate or Eastham).
  • Her mother is taken to be Stephen’s wife Mehitable Buck, married 1679; no record names Sarah’s mother.

  • Disproven
Elisha was a son of Eliphalet and grandson of Peter

Mollie follows Davis's Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth (1899). The Scituate records give "Elisha, s. Jo[h]n Jr. and Sarah, May 25, 1716": John Holbrook and Sarah Chittenden. John moved to Eastham, where Elisha married, and died there by 1749; that this is the same Elisha is about 95% sure. Peter's son Eliphalet lived and died at Bellingham.
