Dorcas Joyce

Also Dorcas Bassett

Probably a daughter of John Joyce of Yarmouth, Massachusetts, whose will of 1666 left twenty shillings each to his daughters Mary and Dorcas, and probably the wife of Nathaniel Bassett, whom she married about 1661. Probably the mother of Mary (Bassett) Mulford and Sarah (Bassett) Nickerson; as the compiled accounts have it, she was born about 1640 and died in 1707.

Family

Father
John Joyce of Yarmouth

His will of 20 Nov 1666 leaves "unto my two Daughters Mary and Dorcas twenty shillinges apeece" (MD 16:160). That this Dorcas is Nathaniel Bassett's wife is McLean's identification (TAG 43:1-13).

Mother
Dorothy Joyce

Named as John Joyce's wife in his will of 1666; that she was Dorcas's own mother is inferred.

Notes

Daughter of John Joyce of Yarmouth (compiled). Her father’s will of 20 Nov 1666 left “unto my two Daughters Mary and Dorcas twenty shillinges apeece.” It also gave 20s to Richard Tayler “att the Rocke because a poor man,” provided “hee vindecate my name and acknowlidge the wronge that hee hath Done mee about a Calfe” (MD 16:160).

McLean’s study of her father (TAG 43:1-13, 1967) gives her as born about 1640, died 10 June 1707, and married about 1661 Nathaniel Bassett (as quoted on WikiTree). Her husband’s will of 1709/10 left their daughter Mary Mulford “my Chest that was her Mothers and my great Chest that I gave to her mother.”
