- note
- Bradford's list of the Mayflower passengers: "Mr. Steven Hopkins, & Elizabeth, his wife, and 2. children, caled Giles, and Constanta, a doughter, both by a former wife"; and about 1651, "His doughter Constanta is also maried, and hath 12. children." That Constant Snow of Eastham was she is the editors' note to her husband's will (MD 3:167, citing MD 2:12, 118).
Constance came over on the Mayflower in 1620 with her father Stephen Hopkins, her brother Giles and her stepmother Elizabeth; Bradford lists "Giles, and Constanta, a doughter, both by a former wife" (source). She married Nicholas Snow and made her home at Eastham, and about 1651 Bradford could write that she "is also maried, and hath 12. children, all of them living, and one of them maried."
King Philip's War reached the family in her last years. Her son Mark Snow sat on Eastham's town council of war from 29 Feb 1675/6 (Records of the Colony of New Plymouth 5:186), and her grandson John Walker, probably the son of her daughter Sarah (Snow) Walker, was killed with Capt. Michael Pierce near Pawtucket on 26 Mar 1676 (Soldiers in King Philip's War, p. 360; Freeman, History of Cape Cod 2:367n). Her husband died that November, leaving her his stock and movables "for the Comfort and support of her life," and she administered his estate with her sons Mark and John. She died about the middle of October 1677 (record). See Nicholas Snow.
Ruth, who married John Cole, was probably her daughter, and through Ruth she is an ancestor of Hope (Holdershaw) Ellingwood.
Research: Cape Cod ancestry of Hope Holdershaw and Hannah Brown.
