"This is to certify that Peter Doio and Agatha Nickel both in honor living in Curr Pfaltz, Mutterstadt, circuit of Newstadt, have been united in marriage ... Mutterstadt, Curr Pfaltz, 21 Jan., 1675. Jacob Amyot, Pastor."

One of the twelve patentees of New Paltz in 1677, and the son of Chrétien Deyo, another; ancestor of Jane Maria (Deyoe) Adams. The family were French Protestants, refugees in the Palatinate. In January 1675 Pierre was still at Mutterstadt, where the pastor Jacob Amyot certified his marriage to Agatha Nickel and that "they are members of the Reformed church and as far as we know the same are well behaved people"; the certificate, in German, came down in the family and in 1958 was on view at the Huguenot Historical Museum in New Paltz (source). The Deyos came over that year or soon after, and Pierre's eldest son Abraham was born at Hurley in October 1676.

The patentees bought the land from the Esopus in September 1677, and Governor Andros's patent followed; they moved onto it the next year. In 1681 "Peter dolliaw of ye New False" gave a bond at Kingston for fifty-two schepels of wheat, signed "Pierre doyo," the oldest paper in the Deyo collection. The first stone house on what is now Huguenot Street was built for him in 1692 (source). When his father died, his name heads the agreement of October 1687 by which the five heirs divided the estate.

His children: Abraham (b. Hurley 1676, m. Elsie Clearwater), Mary (bp. 1679, m. Jacob Clearwater), Christian (bp. 1681), Pierre (bp. 1683), Margaret (bp. 1683), Madeleine (bp. 1687) and Hendricus (bp. 1690). A family tradition that he died seeking a direct route east to the Hudson, and that "long afterward the buckle of a truss that he had worn was found at the foot of a tree," belongs, LeFevre thought, to his son Pierre. WikiTree gives him the dates c. 1646-50 to c. 1700; they have not been checked.

Research: Ellingwood line: the wives' families (Pattullo and Short, Adams and Deyoe, Rice and Sylvester).
