- Followed her husband and children to Canada about 1820 and settled first at Cobourg.
Great-grandmother of Ruth (Short) Ellingwood, as the family accounts have it. Her marble obelisk at Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough, reads "Sacred to the memory of Mary Lyall, wife of William Jeffrey, aged 83 years" (record). Below her on the same face is "Isabella Hall, dau. of Adam & Catharine Hall, died June 16 1922, aged 85 years," her granddaughter. The obelisk is very probably the Halls' family monument: another face reads "In memoriam of Adam Hall, died Oct. 4, 1881, aged 77 years; also Catharine Jeffrey, wife of the above, died Feb. 26, 1882, aged 75 years." She very probably spent her widowhood with her daughter's family at Peterborough; Find a Grave notes that there is no evidence her husband is buried there.
Her children, as Find a Grave and Skinner's compilation give them: Andrew (1800-1863), born at Foulden, mayor of Cobourg; Isabella (1801-1885), Mrs. George Gillespie of Keene; Jean (1803-1887), Mrs. Grigg; Catharine (1806-1882), who married Adam Hall in 1832 and had at least eight children; and Mary (1809-1883), Mrs. John Short (source). These are John Graham's "five children, one boy and four girls." Find a Grave adds a second son, William (1802-1879), of King Township, whom family researchers doubt.
Family tradition, in Ward Skinner's Descendants of William Jeffrey, has her following her husband to Canada with their five children, settling first at Cobourg, where the Lyalls came too, and then near Keene (source).
Research: Ruth Short's ancestry: the archive, the Ancestry tree, WikiTree and FamilySearch compared.
Open questions
- Her baptism at Chirnside, and her parents. The FamilySearch and WikiTree trees give them as Joseph Lyal (d. 1799) and Jean Simpson, married at Bunkle and Preston in 1763; no record seen; not linked.
- Her death record (6 or 26 May 1857), and the other faces of the monument.
- Whether William (1802-1879) was her son, against Graham's "one boy."
