Notes
Sister of Mary (Jeffrey) Short. Born at Foulden in October 1801, the eldest daughter, she came to Canada with her parents about 1820 and settled at Cobourg, where she married George Gillespie in August 1822. They had twelve children, nine of them named in Ward Skinner’s compilation, and farmed in Otonabee Township, Peterborough County, near Keene; the censuses of 1851 to 1881 find her there, as “Isebell Gillispie,” “Isabel Gilispie” and “Esabell Gillespie.” Her father is said to be buried in her husband’s plot in the Keene cemetery. After George died she lived with her son John on the farm, and she died in August 1885 (source).
Her baptism in the Foulden parish register of 1801, which WikiTree cites, is so far the only record of William Jeffrey’s family in Scotland that anyone has noted: the same register should hold her brothers’ and sisters’ baptisms, Mary’s of 1809 among them.
Open questions
- Her husband’s dates, and the Foulden baptism entry itself, which should name her parents.
