Notes

Mother of Margaret (Kuchenmeister) Hatten. Born at Westphalia, Shelby County, Iowa, in 1878, the second of nine children of George Panian, from Stari Trg in Slovenia, and Anna Haberkorn; the family moved to Royalton, Minnesota, in 1881, to Zell, South Dakota, a year later, and to Almena, Wisconsin, in 1896. (Her sister Rose was born in Minnesota in March 1883, so Zell was 1883 at the earliest.) Married Joseph Kuchenmeister in 1899 and kept the post office for a time. Her portrait, a family history page about her and the Zell photograph of 1885 are in the Gallery.

Open questions

  • Her death: the tree has 8 May 1966 at Rice Lake; the family history page has 7 February 1966, her husband’s birthday.
  • Her mother’s name: Anna Maria Haberkorn in the tree and the Zell caption, “Mary Habercorn” on the family history page. Every source from 1894 to 1922 calls her Mary; very probably one woman, Anna Maria known as Mary (see her page).
