George Haberkorn

Probably the father of Anna Maria Haberkorn, who married Jurji Panian. Born in Bavaria in 1827, he emigrated at seventeen to Dubuque County, Iowa, farmed near Sherrill's Mound, married Theresia Lang in 1852 and built Jefferson Township's first brewery. In 1870 he and his father Adam built the stone house now on the National Register; as the Ancestry tree has it, he died at Sherrill in 1906.

Notes

Anna Maria (Mary) Panian’s father. At seventeen he sailed from Bavaria on the Schiller to Baltimore and went on to Dubuque County, Iowa, where he worked as a farm hand, for a Mr. Steigers and then for Mr. Sherrill, before entering a quarter-section of his own near Sherrill’s Mound. He married Theresia Lang on 4 October 1852; they had ten children, Mary, Adolph, Julia, Rose, George, Joseph, John, Aloys, Theresia and Frank. “The first brewery in Jefferson Township was built and operated by Mr. Haberkorn. … He looks with pride on the old log cabin that marked his introduction into Iowa and declares he has been a Democrat and a Catholic ever since that time. Although often petitioned to accept public office he has steadily refused to do so” (source).

In 1870 he and his father Adam built the stone house that still stands west of Sherrill, with “G. HABERKORN. 1870.” cut over the door and the brewery cellar in a cave in the bluff. The Haberkorn House and Farmstead has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980 (source).
