Mary Sylvester
Probably the mother of Mary Abigail (Rice) Ellingwood. She married Rufus Rice at Durham, Maine, in 1819, lived with him at Pownal, and went west to Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana. Very probably a daughter of Job Sylvester Jr. and Lydia Phillips of Durham. As the Ancestry tree has it, she was born at Durham in 1801, married second a Meader, and died at Momence, Illinois, in 1861.

- Job Sylvester
Stackpole says Job Sylvester Jr. and Lydia Phillips, who settled at Durham about 1800, had nine children, and names seven; a Mary born at Durham in 1801 fits the gap after Benjamin (1799). Job went west about 1840 and died at Manchester, Indiana, where Rufus and Mary lived; his daughter Lydia married Luther Plummer and settled at Manchester, and Mary named a daughter Lucy Plummer Rice. The Durham town records (her birth) or a Dearborn County deed or probate would settle it.

Notes
Mother of Mary Abigail (Rice) Ellingwood, as the Ancestry tree has it. The tree writes her
“Mary Sylvester Rice Meader,” and the records bear out the first part: “Rufus Rice and Mary Sylvester”
married at Durham, Maine, on 10 Oct 1819 (Maine marriage index, FamilySearch 2HKF-3SF, as WikiTree
cites it; record). They lived at Pownal in 1820 and
1830 and went west to Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana, where Rufus is in the 1840 census; her
daughter Sarah Sylvester Rice was born there. She was very probably a daughter of Job Sylvester Jr. and
Lydia Phillips of Durham, who went to Manchester about 1840, and so a granddaughter of Job Sylvester,
a Revolutionary soldier of Hanover, Massachusetts (research/ellingwood/Ellingwood_Wives_Families.md).
