Notes

Wife of Pickett Marvin of Gallia and Jackson counties, Ohio, and very probably the mother of Ruth Marvin. Nothing gives her dates; she is on record as one of the two daughters of George Warth, whose family lived at Fort Harmar, by Marietta, through the Indian war of 1791-95, and as the wife of “Picket Meroin” in the list of the families there (source).

Col. David Barber described the family in 1882: “During the Indian war there came to the stockade in Marietta a family named George Warth, his wife and two daughters and five sons, namely: John, George, Robert, Martin, and Alexander. They came from Virginia, brought up in the woods and were all fine hunters. John and George were employed as rangers, or spies for Fort Harmar.” Her brother Robert was killed by the Indians during the war; John and George “carried the first mails from Marietta to Gallipolis, in canoes,” travelling by night. Her sister Catharine married Joseph Fletcher, surveyor of Gallia County and a judge of the Common Pleas. John and George married the Fleehart sisters, who “were noted for their skill with the rifle. It was said that Sally Fleehart could bring down a hawk upon the wing, or a squirrel from a tree top as readily as her husband, John Warth” (source).
