Notes

Widow of Ensign Hopestill Foster, and his administratrix in 1678.

Her second husband, Edmund Brown, son of Deacon William Brown of Sudbury, settled first in Dorchester and became a Boston shopkeeper. He was a Boston constable in 1687, a lieutenant of militia, an overseer of the poor and, in 1692, a deputy for Boston. Roberts says that “In 1694, he married his second or third wife, the widow of Hopestill Foster (1673), and he died soon after” (History of the AHAC 1:283).

A deed of 2 Aug 1726 for a family house on Fitch’s alley reserves “the portion set apart for the thirds of Elizabeth Brown, grandmother of Samuel Foster,” her dower from her first husband’s estate (Suffolk Deeds 40:22-23, abstracted in NEHGR 178:35).

Mollie’s pencilled “d. 1733” (the last figure is unclear), “in [King’s?] Chapel Burying Ground Boston,” probably confuses her with Elizabeth (Phipps) Foster, widow of a later Hopestill (b. c. 1670), who died 15 Feb 1732/3.

Open questions

  • Her mother: the colonial tree marks Elizabeth Dowell as her mother on documentary evidence. Her birth record names only her father, so the page keeps the link as inferred, probable.
  • Her second marriage: before 1694 (Whitmore) or in 1694 (Roberts). No record of it seen.

Checked against the records

  • Disproven
Elizabeth Payson's second husband was Edmund Brown, soapboiler

Edmond Brown was a Boston shopkeeper. The soap boiler was her first husband, Ensign Hopestill Foster, whose son Samuel called himself "son of Hopestill Foster the soap boiler" in a deed of 1699/1700. She married Hopestill at Dorchester on 15 Feb 1666/7, and Brown before 1694.

Elizabeth Payson was born 9 Feb 1645

Born 4 Feb 1644/5 at Roxbury: "Elizabeth, d. Giles, Feb. 4, 1644" (Roxbury vital records). Her father, Deacon Giles Payson, died at Roxbury, not Dorchester, on 28 Jan 1688/9, aged 78, and her second husband was Edmond, not Edward, Brown.
