Married Jane Lindsey at Boston in 1750; their children Samuel, William, Jane and Martha were recorded at Roxbury, and he was dead by July 1760. Possibly the father of Mary (Foster) Thompson, though no Mary is among his recorded children.

Notes

Children recorded at Roxbury (VR 1:134-135): Samuel, 9 May 1751; William, 7 Feb 1753; Jane, 25 Mar 1755; Martha, 21 Apr 1760. Guardians were appointed in 1773 for John, Martha and Jane (Suffolk Probate 15400, 15401, 15599); the son John is not among the Roxbury births. Mollie lists his children as Jane, John, Martha, William and Mary; there is no Mary in the records found. The children married at Roxbury: William to Mary Draper, 11 June 1778; Martha to Paul Dudley, 27 Apr 1779; Jane to Thomas Cheney, 6 Apr 1780 (VR 2:153).

Mollie calls him a cordwainer; that has not been seen in a record.

Open questions

  • His parentage. A Samuel Foster will of 1728 (Suffolk no. 5650) may be his father’s and may name him.
  • His estate papers (no. 12403) and the division Mollie cites.
Mollie's typescript· 1 passage · 1 claim checked

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. Mollie calls him a cordwainer of Roxbury (no record seen shows the trade) who left a widow, Jane, and young children, one of whom married Mary Draper and moved early to Deer Isle.

John Foster (7) was a cordwainer ( a shoemaker) and he resided in Roxbury. He left a widow Jane, and minor children.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
Mary Foster was a daughter of John Foster and his wife Jane

Possible only. John Foster married Jane Lindsey at Boston on 20 Apr 1750, about five years after Mary was born, and their children recorded at Roxbury (1751-1760) and in the 1773 guardianships include no Mary. Hosmer calls her a sister of William Foster of Deer Isle, so she may be John's daughter by an earlier wife.
