Notes

Periwig-maker, of Boston. Mollie’s comment on his trade: “a long step from the Dukes of Flanders!”

On 27 June 1722 “Samuel Foster, periwig-maker, and Rachel, his wife,” with his sister Rebecca and her husband John Best, tanner, and his mother, “Rebecca Scorch, wife and attorney to William Scorch, cooper,” sold to Richard Butt for £150 “9 or 10 acres of upland in Squantum” in Dorchester, which had been left to them by Samuel Foster, late of Boston, his father (Suffolk Deeds 36:68, abstracted in NEHGR 178:34). On 2 Aug 1726 he and Rachel, with his mother, deeded his father’s share of a Boston house and land to Elizabeth Foster, shopkeeper and widow; the property ran “west on Fitch’s alley, and front east on the lane leading from the town dock to the yard of Nicholas Morecock” (Suffolk Deeds 40:22-23, abstracted in NEHGR 178:35).

Open questions

  • His death. There is no Suffolk probate for a Samuel Foster in the 1740s; check the will of 1728 (no. 5650).
  • His mother: the colonial tree marks Rebecca (Briscoe) as his mother on documentary evidence (the 1722 deed, and NEHGR 178, which lists him among her children by Samuel Foster). The page keeps the link as inferred, probable.
Mollie's typescript· 1 passage · 2 claims checked

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. Mollie says his marriage to Rachel Kneeland brought into the family "a rather remarkable strain, and the only stain," and that he was a periwig-maker, "a long step from the Dukes of Flanders!"

Samuel Foster (6), married Rachel Kneeland, thus bringing into the family a rather remarkable strain , and the only stain, according to one's point of view. ... He was a periwig-maker ( along step from the Dukes of Flanders!)

Checked against the records

  • Proven
    Samuel Foster (b. 1701) was a periwig-maker

Confirmed. A deed names "Samuel Foster of Boston, periwig maker, and wife Rachel" with the widow and the daughter of Samuel Foster (b. 1676), which is the evidence for his parentage. It is dated 27 June 1722 (Suffolk Deeds 36:68), not 1724.

  • Disproven
Rachel Kneeland married Samuel Foster on 1 April 1722

They married at Boston on 5 Apr 1722, by Mr. Joseph Sewall (Boston marriages, image checked). Mollie's Foster chart (p. 113) gives 1721.
