Compiled genealogy, read in the archive.org full text. John Cogswell, "with his wife Elizabeth and eight children, embarked May 23, 1635, at Bristol, England, on the Angel Gabriel," which was wrecked at Pemaquid in the storm of 15 Aug 1635; he had sold a homestead at Westbury and Westbury Leigh, Wiltshire (pp. xvi-xvii). The line John > William (m. Susanna Hawkes) > Adam (p. 28). Of Adam: "Mr. Cogswell was a trustee of the parish, a selectman of the town, and held a captain's commission" (p. 29); his wife's surname is left blank. "Abigail, b. March 21, 1689; m. Thomas Varney" (p. 28).

Also used: the Chebacco church begun in William Cogswell's house, with the first meeting in February 1677, his gift of the meeting-house lot, and the ordination of John Wise there on 12 Aug 1683 (pp. 9-10); the 1693 seating, with Susanna (Hawkes) Cogswell beside the minister's wife (p. 10); William's will of 5 Aug 1696 and his burial on 17 Dec 1700, when a town meeting adjourned "to give opportunity for citizens to attend Mr. Cogswell's funeral" (pp. 10-11); the depositions of William Tarbox and Samuel Haines on the wreck of the Angel Gabriel (pp. 11-12); John Cogswell's town grants of 1636, his freedom (3 Mar 1635/6) and his son John's death at sea in 1653 (p. 13); Elizabeth Cogswell, daughter of Rev. William Thompson, vicar of Westbury, and his wife Phillis, who died 2 June 1676; Adam Cogswell, b. 12 Jan 1667, d. 8 Feb (the Ipswich VR has 9 Feb 1748), and his children (pp. 28-29); and Adam's daughter Katharine, d. 23 Oct 1729 (p. 28).

For King Philip's War (research/king-philips-war/), pp. 9-13: the war years of William Cogswell's family went to the suit of his nephew John Cogswell, heard at Ipswich in 1675, at Salem in Jan 1676, by the Court of Assistants in Sept 1676 and by the General Court on 29 May 1677 (pp. 10-11); John "delivered his person to the marshal" for £13 4s. costs (p. 10). This is the imprisonment Felt (1834) mistook for captivity "among the Indians." Jameson lists no Edward among William's children, so the Edward Cogswell of the Narragansett No. 1 grant is not shown to be his son.
