Notes

Named in his father’s will. His father deeded him the Canada expedition land in 1736. Married Susanna Low. Their son Capt. David Low (bp. 5 May 1728, d. 1782) marched as a lieutenant on the Lexington alarm and led a company of volunteers in the Saratoga campaign of 1777 (Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors 9:1021); Mollie calls that David a brother of Nathan (b. 1742), but he was a first cousin. Seth Low, mayor of New York, descends from this David.

“David Low juner was Imprest into his Majesties Service In march, 1748,” in King George’s War (Ipswich impressment list, Waters vol. 2).

Checked against the records

  • Proven
Sgt. David Low went against Quebec in 1690 and got land for it

Waters lists David Low among the Ipswich men on Phips's 1690 expedition. In 1735 he claimed in the Ipswich-Canada grant (now Winchendon) by his own service, and in 1736 he deeded his son David land granted to men "which formerly went in an expedition to Canada under Sir William Phipps, of which I, David Lowe, was one."

  • Disproven
Capt. David Low was a brother of Nathan Low

His service is confirmed: lieutenant on the Lexington alarm, and captain of volunteers sent to Gates's army in 1777 (Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors). But he was Nathan's first cousin, David (bp. 1728), son of David and Susanna Low. Caleb Low's recorded children include no David.

  • Proven
Seth Low and Rufus Choate descend from Thomas Low

Seth Low, mayor of New York, descends from Sgt. David Low and Mary Lamb through their son David (Ipswich records; Merriam). Rufus Choate is a kinsman through the Varneys and Proctors (Choate genealogy), and probably descends from Thomas Low too, through his grandmother Ruth Low. Mollie's "Joseph" is not identified.
