Thomas Varney Jr. of Chebacco in Ipswich, Massachusetts, born there in 1682 to Corporal Thomas Varney and Abigail Proctor. Father of Abigail (Varney) Low, wife of Caleb Low, and probably of five sons born 1715 to 1730; his first wife was Abigail Cogswell, and in 1739 he married Ann Low, a widow.

Notes
Children: Abigail (1713), Thomas (1715), Adam (1724), Joseph (bp. 1726), Stephen (1729) and Nathan (1730). Named “Thomas Varney, brother” in his son-in-law Caleb Low’s will.
Hammatt: “Thomas Varney, son of Corp’l Thomas, was Constable in 1726.” His mother was Abigail (Proctor) Varney, so he was a nephew of John Proctor, hanged in 1692. Mollie makes Abigail Proctor his wife; she was his mother, and his wife was Abigail Cogswell.
Open questions
- Caleb Low’s will of 1773 names “Thomas Varney, brother.” The colonial tree reads him as Caleb’s brother-in-law, that is Abigail’s brother Thomas (b. 1715), not this Thomas, who would have been ninety in 1773 and Caleb’s father-in-law. The page follows the earlier reading; check the will.

Mollie's Varney chart has him born on 24 Dec 1682 (the records give 3 Dec) and married to Abigail Proctor, who was in fact his mother; his wife was Abigail Cogswell.
