Increase Mather's Brief History of the Warr with the Indians, title page, 1676
About it
“A Brief History of the VVarr with the Indians in Nevv-England, (From June 24, 1675. when the first English-man was murdered by the Indians, to August 12. 1676. when Philip, alias Metacomet, the principal Author and Beginner of the Warr, was slain.)” Increase Mather, teacher of the Second Church in Boston and son of Rev. Richard Mather of Dorchester, wrote it as the war ended, and it was “Printed and Sold by John Foster over against the Sign of the Dove. 1676,” the first history of the war printed in New England. Foster, a son of Capt. Hopestill Foster of Dorchester, had set up Boston’s first printing press the year before. On page 15 of this same copy is Foster’s woodcut of the colony’s seal, kept in the Gallery as a picture of its own. A London edition, printed for Richard Chiswell, followed the same year.
