What it says
“November the 25 1827. Mr Abner Baker Sir ples to grant Jesse Collens lisens to marrey Mary Red and oblige them. atest: Stephen Read, Hirom(?) Collins.” Signed at right: “James Read.”
Abner Baker was the Clay County clerk. A note like this, written eighteen days before the license and the wedding (13 Dec 1827), put on file the consent of the bride’s father (occasionally a guardian), so James Read is Mary’s father. It is the only record that names her as his daughter. The second witness’s name reads as Hiram Collins. The later index note “of James” beside Mary’s name in the Clay County marriage index is the clerk’s cross-reference to this consent.
