Notes
Rev. William Noyes, rector of Cholderton, Wiltshire, a parish about eleven miles from Salisbury. He matriculated at University College, Oxford, on 15 Nov 1588, aged 20, took his B.A. on 31 May 1592, and was instituted rector of Cholderton in 1602; the diocesan register shows him there until 1621, when he resigned and his son Nathan succeeded him (source). His grandson Nicholas called him “a very learned man.” He married Anne Parker, sister of the Puritan divine Rev. Robert Parker, about 1595, and died intestate early in 1622.
Their children included Ephraim (1596), who lived at Orcheston St. Mary; Nathan (1597), his successor as rector, who died in 1651; and James (1608) and Nicholas, who went to New England in 1634 and settled at Newbury. Nicholas’s son was Rev. Nicholas Noyes of Salem. Anne’s will names a son-in-law, Thomas Kent of Upper Wallop.
The Noyes genealogy notes a will of 1590 naming “the sons of Robert Noyes of Cholderton,” and that this Robert “may have been the father of William”; that is unproven.
