Mary Whiting

Also Mary Sheldon · Mary Ashley

Probably the elder of the two children of Joseph Whiting, then a merchant at Westfield, Massachusetts, and his first wife, Mary Pynchon, born in 1672. She married Joseph Sheldon of Northampton, who took the family to Suffield and died at Boston in 1708, and as his widow married John Ashley of Westfield. Probably the mother of Mary (Sheldon) Hitchcock, to whom her Pynchon inheritance passed.

Notes

Mother of Mary (Sheldon) Hitchcock. She was the elder of the two children of Joseph Whiting, then a merchant at Westfield, and his first wife Mary Pynchon: “Children of Joseph and Mary Pynchon Whiting — Mary born Aug. 19, 1672, married Joseph Sheldon and second John Ashley” (source). Dwight and Savage give the same birth (source). Her mother died soon after her brother’s birth in 1674, and her father took a second wife, Anne Allyn, in 1676 and went back to Hartford.

She married Joseph Sheldon of Northampton, who took the family to Suffield and died at Boston in 1708 while serving in the General Court; as his widow she married John Ashley of Westfield (source). Her inheritance from the Pynchons passed in time to her daughter Mary (Sheldon) Hitchcock.
