Notes
Grandfather of Anna (Hitchcock) Chapin. A son of Isaac Sheldon of Northampton and Mary Woodford, he married Mary, daughter of Joseph Whiting, and moved to Suffield, which he represented in the General Court. Savage: “JOSEPH, Northampton … m. Mary, d. of Joseph Whiting of Hartford or Westfield, had Joseph, wh. d. Dec. 1694; Joseph, again, b. 13 June 1695, wh. d. young; Mary; Ary; whose dates are unkn.; rem. to Suffield, there had Joseph, again, 26 Dec. 1700; Rachel, 1703; and Benjamin, 1705; was rep. and d. at Boston 1708, when the Gov. and both branch. of the legislat. attend. his funeral. The wid. m. John Ashley of Westfield” (source). The Hitchcock genealogy calls him “Joseph Sheldon of Sheffield, who was a representative to the general court in 1708” (source); Sheffield was not yet settled, and Suffield is meant.
The same book makes him “a direct descendant of Archbishop Gilbert Sheldon of Canterbury, England.” No source supports it, and it is not used here.
